Baron Mullis preaching

"When The Spirit Blows In"

Texts: Romans 8:22-25; Acts 2:5-21

PENTECOST BANNERS 2012

We recognize Pentecost as the beginning of Christ's church. Titled "Anointing Power," the pair of banners you will see at the front of the sanctuary this Sunday makes use of batik fabrics in red, gold and yellow. The movement in the fabrics conveys the power and energy of the Holy Spirit coming upon the apostles as tongues of fire, inspiring and enabling the start of the church. This Living Spirit that moved on that first Pentecost continues to move in our midst and in our souls across all boundaries and throughout all time.

UPDATE - LIBERIA

As you read this today, the Mercer team is landing after a fifteen hour flight to Liberia.  We’ll wait for our luggage and for the fourteen boxes holding seven hundred pounds of books, school supplies, and instructional materials, largely gifts from MPC.  All sixteen of us will be tired but excited and ready to begin to teach at Ricks Institute.  Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we work side by side with our Liberian friends.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

  • Support VBS by donating requested snack and lunch items.  See display in Welcome Center. Bring items to church by date listed on reminder slip.
  • Do you have a saw?  Can you cut felt?  You can help with a special VBS project.  In order to offer a nativity scene craft, we need wooden blocks and felt pieces cut to a pattern.  Contact Melinda today if you can help.
  • One & two day volunteers needed too!  Prepare and serve snack one day; help staff nursery for volunteers’ younger kids; help with an activity or closing day lunch.  Even if you only have 2-4 hours to give, we still need you.
  • Register the children in your life for VBS today, Sunday, May 27!  We need a few weeks to order final supplies (including t-shirts) and staff enough volunteers.

MISSION CAMP DEADLINE

All who have completed 2nd grade and older are welcome to attend ‘It’s Not All About Me’ Mission Camp here at MPC July 23-27.  Be sure to register by the deadline next Sunday, June 3.  Registration fee is $110 by June 3 and $150 afterwards.  Forms can be found on-line or on the bulletin board across from nursery.  Contact Melinda Sandkam msandkam @morningsidepc.org with questions.

INQUIRERS' CLASS & NEW MEMBERS' CLASS

On June 3, Morningside will offer an Inquirers' Class. This class is for anyone who wants to know a bit more about Morningside Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church in general. It can be for folks who want to join on the following Sunday after our New Members' Class, or it can just be a tune-up for those who want a refresher on Presbyterian beliefs. Our New Members' Class will be offered on June 10. At the New Members' Class, those joining the church that day will be introduced to Session and received into membership, as well as, given an overview of ways to plug-in more deeply to the life of faith at Morningside Presbyterian Church. Both take place at 9:45 a.m. in the Session Room.

SPECIAL SUMMER CONCERT AT MPC

All are invited to The Atlanta Opera High School Institute Spring Concert at Morningside on Sunday, June 10, at 4 p.m. (free admission). This concert will culminate the 2011-2012 High School Opera educational program, and will feature 11 select young singers from public and private schools throughout the area, performing highlights from the operatic repertoire. Walter Huff is music director of the program and will accompany the singers. This was a highlight of last year’s summer offerings.  For more information, visit http://www.atlantaopera.org/calendar/view.aspx?pid=62346143.

THEOLOGY ON TAP RETREAT

John and Ann Watson have graciously agreed to host Morningside’s men’s group for their annual retreat in Suches on June 23. John and Ann's home is an easy drive from Morningside and is located near the Appalachian trail.  RSVP to the church office office@morningsidepc.org if you would like to attend.

SUPPORT MEN AT JOURNEY SHELTER

In the month of June, there are two ways to reach out to the men staying at Journey.  Sign up to provide a dish for dinner on Sunday, June 10 and/or bring in requested items to stock shelter breakfast needs.  Place non-perishable items (such as grits, oatmeal, pancake mix, syrup, cereal, can fruit juice, canned fruit, coffee, sugar and creamer) in baskets in Welcome Center by June 17.

AN ADDITION TO YOUR SUMMER READING

Copies of the devotional booklet Our Daily Bread are available in the narthex and the welcome center. You may pick up a copy as you leave church today.

SCOTLAND 2013

Do you want to travel to the land of bagpipes, oatcakes and Calvinism? If so, Morningside is offering a trip to Scotland to celebrate the 499th anniversary of the birth of John Knox. Travel agent Kaye Carmichael, who planned MPC’s Paris-Geneva trip, has put together a great itinerary for a nine-day trip around central Scotland. Highlights include: Inverness and Loch Ness, Culloden and Castle Cawdor, St. Andrews, a visit to Scotland's smallest distillery as well as Glasgow, and of course, Edinburgh! Travel is planned for August 2013. If interested, contact Baron Mullis at baron.mullis @morningsidepc.org.

CHURCH OFFICE

The church office will be closed Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day.
