WORSHIP MAY 27, 2012
PENTECOST

THE GATHERING Chris Peters
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place, and
suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it
filled the entire house, where they were sitting.
People: Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested
on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began
to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Leader: Let us worship God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. - Acts 2:1-4

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 313 Come Down, O Love Divine

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we have not lived up to our calling. You have shown us your way.
In Jesus Christ, in the power of your Holy Spirit, you swept away the boundaries of
sin and brokenness and invited us into fellowship. We have resolutely set our
minds and our hands to rebuilding those barriers. We do not embrace the other.
We believe our own righteousness and the sin of others to be insurmountable. We
have not lived as though your grace is sufficient for all our needs. So forgive us, we
pray. Forgive us, and bring us to that place of childlike love and friendship to
which you have called us. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought,
but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.
People: And God, who searches the heart, knows the mind of the Spirit,
because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Romans 8:26-27

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 126)
Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, with all Thy quickening powers; come, shed
abroad a Savior’s love, and that shall kindle ours.

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from The Brief Statement of Faith
We trust in God the Holy Spirit,
everywhere the giver and renewer of life.
The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith,
sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor,
and binds us together with all believers
in the one body of Christ, the church.
The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles
rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture,
engages us through the Word proclaimed,
claims us in the waters of baptism,
feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation,
and calls women and men to all ministries of the church.
In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage
to pray without ceasing,
to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,
to unmask idolatries in church and culture,
to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,
and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks
and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth,
praying, "Come, Lord Jesus!" Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For
thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
