"The Problem of Two People with the Same Bad Idea"

  Texts: 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1; 1 Samuel 8:4-11, 16-20

FLOWERS THIS SUNDAY

The sanctuary flowers are given to the glory of God and in honor of the baptism of Preston Caldwell Barnette by Anne, Will, Mac and Sawyer Barnette.

SUMMER TEN TEN

As our 3rd grade graduates join the 4th and 5th graders on Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m., we begin the summer with fun and outreach to community. This morning, the Double Digits created delicious salads for the men staying at Journey. Each week, they begin with some ping pong and fussball and proceed to outreach or Bible lesson with a preparation for attending worship at the end.

SPECIAL SUMMER CONCERT AT MPC

All are invited to The Atlanta Opera High School Institute Spring Concert at Morningside this afternoon at 4 p.m. (free admission). This concert will culminate the 2011-2012 High School Opera educational program, and will feature 11 select young singers from public and private schools throughout the area, performing highlights from the operatic repertoire. Walter Huff is music director of the program and will accompany the singers. This was a highlight of last year’s summer offerings. For more information, visit http://www.atlantaopera.org/calendar/view.aspx?pid=62346143.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

- Support VBS by donating requested snack and lunch items.  See the display in the Welcome Center. Bring your donated items to church by the date listed on the reminder slip.

- Take-home projects are now available to prepare materials ahead of time. Contact Melinda today if you can help.

- One and two-day volunteers needed, too! Prepare and serve snack one day; help staff the nursery for our volunteers' younger kids; help with an activity or closing day lunch. Even if you only have 2-4 hours to give, we still need you.

MISSION CAMP VOLUNTEERS

It looks like we will have at least 25 attending Mission Camp July 23-27.  Monday, Thursday and Friday, we will need at least seven drivers each day (or half day) to get to our outreach destinations.  Contact Melinda today to sign up to accompany kids to locations such as Atria Senior Community, Atlanta Humane Society, Gateway Childcare or the Intown Collaborative Ministries’ food pantry.  If you are seeking a big summer adventure, join us for overnight hike on Tuesday and Wednesday.

THEOLOGY ON TAP RETREAT

John and Ann Watson have graciously agreed to host Morningside’s men’s group for their annual retreat in Suches on June 23. John and Ann's home is an easy drive from Morningside and is located near the Appalachian trail.  RSVP to the church office office@morningsidepc.org if you would like to attend.

JUNE 24-SING WITH THE CHOIR

Ever wanted to sing with Morningside's Chancel Choir, but didn't think you had the time or the training? Well, here's your chance to join them for a "One Sunday Only" appearance! Eight MPC members can sign up (first come, first serve) by emailing music@morningsidepc.org. Those singing must come to one rehearsal on June 20, 7:30-9 p.m. and arrive on June 24 for a 9:30 a.m. warm-up/rehearsal. Wear a robe, process with the choir, and sing a simple hymn arrangement, plus a closing choral response. If you can carry a tune, you're in!

GOOD MORNING FROM LIBERIA!

As you read this, we’re two weeks into our teaching experience at Ricks.  Mercer students talk about how much Ricks students want to learn, the lack of discipline problems here, and what we are privileged to witness when more than 300 students from grades 4 through 12 meet for the daily morning assembly.  One student explains it well. “This morning the singing of the students catches me off guard.  Their voices were so pure and so grand that I had to choke back tears…. As they sang, the different levels of student voices broke in to the different parts of the song without being cued.  It was fantastic!”

SUPPORT MEN AT JOURNEY SHELTER

Bring in the requested items to re-stock the shelter with breakfast items. Place non-perishable items (grits, oatmeal, pancake mix, syrup, cereal, can fruit juice, canned fruit, coffee, sugar and creamer) in the Welcome Center baskets by next Sunday, June 17.

SCOTLAND 2013

Do you want to travel to the land of bagpipes, oatcakes and Calvinism? If so, Morningside is offering a trip to Scotland to celebrate the 499th anniversary of the birth of John Knox. Travel is planned for August 2013. If interested, contact Baron Mullis at baron.mullis @morningsidepc.org.

YOUTH NEWS

Don’t forget to buy one of those $10 “stock” certificates from one of our youth planning to travel to the Montreat Middle School Conference in South Carolina next month.  Hey—you get a report back from the kids plus a hot-dog lunch on Sunday, August 5, after worship.

THINK ABOUT RETREATING!

It’s not too soon to mark off Oct. 19-21 on your calendar and plan to get away to cool and lovely Montreat, NC, for our fourth annual all-church retreat.  Each year, it’s been an event to remember for the whole family.  Watch for details in the next couple of months.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS

A flower calendar is posted on the bulletin board in the hallway outside the Session Room, and if you wish to give flowers in honor or in memory of a loved one, we invite you to write your name and phone number next to the desired date. It is possible to share a date with other members if you want to give one arrangement or you may sign up alone to give both arrangements. Contact Anna Best in the church office office @morningsidepc.org for more information.

MEALS ON WHEELS

Driver needed for Meals on Wheels route the second Wednesday of every month beginning in September. Please contact Sarah Brownlee at rsbrownlee1046@att.net if you can help.
