LAY READER
In keeping with the Presbyterian tenet of the priesthood of all believers, Morningside members participate regularly in worship leadership. Today's lay reader is Nancy Hamilton.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
This morning Ansley Elizabeth Powell, daughter of Rich and Jennifer Powell, will receive the sacrament of baptism.
CONGRATULATIONS TO GUEST CHORISTERS
Check out the new faces in the Chancel Choir today! Nine Morningside members and two regular visitors signed up for our second annual “Sing with the Choir” Sunday. They rehearsed with the choir last Wednesday and are ready to raise their voices in song today. Congratulations to Mary Chapman, Cynthia Holzheimer, Kacee Knauer, Susan Oder, Kim Perez, Leslie Prince, Katrina Weis, Link Marx, Jeff Peters, Michael Siedschlag, and David York.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL IS HERE
Over fifty children will fill the building this week for VBS. Please keep all of the children and volunteers in your prayers as they “Follow the Star” to learn about the gift of Jesus through crafts, songs, Bible Explorations and other fun activities. If you are available to help this afternoon, please join us for set up 2-5 p.m. All are also welcome to closing day program on Friday, June 29 at 12 noon. Join us in Fellowship Hall to see and hear what the kids have been up to all week and enjoy lunch with VBS families. Assistance with clean up that afternoon 1-2:30 is also greatly appreciated. Contact Melinda Sandkam with any questions.
MISSION CAMP
It looks like we will have at least 31 attending Mission Camp July 23-27. Monday, Thursday and Friday, we will need at least ten drivers each day (or half day) to get to our outreach destinations. See needs on bulletin board near church office or contact Melinda today to sign up to accompany kids to locations such as Atria Senior Community, Atlanta Humane Society, Gateway Childcare or the Intown Collaborative Ministries’ food pantry. If you are seeking a big summer adventure, join us for overnight hike on Tuesday and Wednesday.
CLIFTON SANCTUARY MINISTRIES
MPC would like to provide a Welcome Home Basket for each man at Clifton transitioning from homelessness by moving into their own home. We will be collecting household pantry items for these baskets from June 17 through July 15. A list of requested items can be found on the bulletin board in the Welcome Center. Please contact Shepherd David Johnston with any questions at 678.705.1628 or dmjohnst@gmail.com
GEORGIA SHAKESPEARE OUTING
Illyria, 12th Night the Musical is a hit – a shipwreck, separated twins and love promises to entertain with this musical adaptation! MPC is off to the theater for a 7 p.m. performance on Sunday, July 22. Group tickets are $30 each (made out to MPC). Reserve your spot today by turning in check. We can also share a meal together beforehand on picnic grounds. Contact Melinda Sandkam with any questions. Deadline: July 8.
YOUTH NEWS
Don’t forget to buy one of those $10 “stock” certificates from one of our youth planning to travel to the Montreat Middle School Conference in South Carolina next month. Hey—you get a report back from the kids plus a hot-dog lunch on Sunday, August 5, after worship.
THINK ABOUT RETREATING!
It’s not too soon to mark off Oct. 19-21 on your calendar and plan to get away to cool and lovely Montreat, NC, for our fourth annual all-church retreat. Each year, it’s been an event to remember for the whole family. Watch for details in the next couple of months.
SANCTUARY FLOWERS
A flower calendar is posted on the bulletin board in the hallway outside the Session Room, and if you wish to give flowers in honor or in memory of a loved one, we invite you to write your name and phone number next to the desired date. It is possible to share a date with other members if you want to give one arrangement or you may sign up alone to give both arrangements. Contact Anna Best in the church office office@morningsidepc.org for more information.
MEALS ON WHEELS
Driver needed for Meals on Wheels route for the second Wednesday of every month beginning in September. Please contact Sarah Brownlee at rsbrownlee1046@att.net if you can help.
CONGRATULATIONS TO
David Yntema and Esther Patrick on the birth of their son, Zane Matthew Otto Yntema, on June 14, 2012.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE
Adult Sunday School Class—9:45 a.m. in Room 201—The Short Course
What you didn’t know you could learn in Confirmation and why it matters for adults.
Next Sunday, July 1 we begin a discussion-based series that will take major themes from our Spring 2013 Youth Confirmation class, articulate those themes for adults, and frame them with questions related to personal and communal discipleship. Themes are complimentary but not exclusive – you are invited to join us as your schedule permits. This series, taught by Chris Peters, is designed as a refresher, primer, and thought-provoker for adults!
July 1—“God’s Story: From Darkness to New Creation”
We’ll engage a scripture timeline with major themes to spur discussion on how we read the Bible today.
Children’s Classes
The Preschool Class will talk about how God hears our prayers as they listen to the story A Baby for Hannah. Kindergarten through 2nd grade children will learn how grown-up Samuel anointed David, the shepherd boy, as the future king of Israel.
