THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, you have created us in your image and called us into right relationship. We have stood astounded by your grace. You have called us to a journey where being welcomed is not a guarantee. We have stayed in place, embracing comfort over relationship. Despite our hesitation, you welcome us into your
holy presence. In your mercy, forgive us. Create in us clean hearts and right spirits. Show us the path of discipleship and let us walk boldly. In the name of Jesus
Christ we pray. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: “God sent redemption to his people; God has commanded his covenant forever.
People: Holy and awesome is God’s name.
Leader: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good
understanding.” Believe the promise of the gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
- Psalm 111
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-8 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-yearolds in Room 011; K - 2nd grade in Room 001.
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON 2 Corinthians 12:2-10 (page 174 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE ANTHEM On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand Earlene Rentz
On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eye to Canaan’s fair and happy land, where my
possessions lie. O’er all those wide extended plains shines one eternal day when love forevermore shall
reign, and turn the night to day. There David stands with harp in hand as master of the choir; ten thousand times was David blessed, the music rang with power. No fear or sorrows or distress shall reach that
blissful shore; all sickness, suffering, pain, and death are felt and feared no more. I’m bound for the
promised land; oh, who will come and go with me? I’m bound for the promised land.
THE SECOND LESSON Mark 6:1-13 (page 38 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “The Wisdom of the Un-Welcomed” Chris Peters
* THE HYMN 393 Take Up Your Cross, the Savior Said
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ
his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the
right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Wyeth, arr. Innes
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 354 Guide My Feet
(verses 1 through 4)
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (excerpt) Lloyd Pfautsch
“Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart, O take and seal it; seal it for Thy courts above. I am bound for the kingdom, will you go to glory with me? Hallelujah! Praise
the Lord!”
