BAPTISM THIS SUNDAY

James and Kate Scribner, son and daughter of Doug and Heather Scribner will receive the sacrament of baptism this Sunday.

YOUTH LITURGIST/LAY READER

In keeping with the Presbyterian tenet of the priesthood of all believers, Morningside members participate regularly in worship leadership. Today's lay reader is Tim Gargis who will be reading the first lesson. Our youth liturgist is Nicholas Lazzaro, who will be leading the prayers.

REPORT ON YOUTH TRIP

Four MPC Youth and their two advisors return this afternoon from their Mission and Montreat week attending the Middle School Montreat Conference in Clinton, South Carolina.  They will be hosting a hot dog lunch on Sunday, August 5 immediately following worship to report to their “stock holders” regarding their experiences.  All are welcome in Fellowship Hall to hear about their trip!

MISSION CAMP

We will have 33 children attending Mission Camp this week.  The children invite you to support their car wash on Thursday, July 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. We still need 1 driver to transport the kids to our outreach destination on Friday from 12 to 3 p.m.  Contact Melinda to volunteer msandkam@morningsidepc.org. Mission Camp attendees will serve ice cream and share about their week at Fellowship Hour on Sunday, July 29. Please join us to hear about their week of outreach to the community.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CHRIS PETERS?

Did you know that Chris Peters, our Youth Director and Summer Seminary Intern, is a 2012 Montreat Youth Conference Co-Director? Until August 4, Chris is overseeing small groups and recreation events during two weeks of youth conferences that will be attended by 2,000 high school youth! Chris invites you to follow his journey online through a picture blog administrated by Chris and Rev. Diana Bell, the “Indoors” Co-Director, at  http://perfectlyomega.wordpress.com/.

SUMMER DINNER AT CLIFTON

The kids at Mission Camp will prepare a dinner for 30 men at Clifton Sanctuary Ministries for Saturday, July 28. If you can help in the kitchen 9-11:30 a.m. this Friday, July 27, contact Melinda Sandkam msandkam @morningsidepc.org. Contact David Johnston dmjohnst@hotmail.com if you can help serve and transport the meal Saturday evening.

LIBRARY RENOVATIONS

Contact Melinda today msandkam @morningsidepc.org if you would be interested in helping sort through and move library books one day in August.  Books for adults will be moved to Session Room shelves for better accessibility and collection of children’s books will be expanded in resource room.

SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK OFF

August 6, many of the children of MPC start back to school!  Here at Morningside, we begin our Sunday school year the following Sunday, August 12 at 9:45 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to this hour of fun, with light breakfast items. Crafts, dress-up corner, and Jonah’s whale promise lots of smiles. The kids will also make a dish to support Journey’s men shelter. Contact children’s education leaders Sue Ballay sueandjoe@att.net and Jill Davis jdavis@tuxox.com, if you can help.

THORNWELL OFFERING

On Sunday, August 12, MPC will collect a special offering for Thornwell Home for Children in South Carolina. This home serves children from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Please plan on giving generously in the envelopes decorated by Mission Camp kids!

HIGHER GROUND

The Higher Ground blog is an ongoing series of insightful messages from four long-time Atlanta faith leaders - the Rev. Joanna Adams, Imam Plemon El-Amin, the Rev. Joseph Roberts and Rabbi Alvin Sugarman. Take part in the Higher Ground blog and join the movement to inspire positive change. You can find the latest blog at http://www.highergroundgroup.org/.

“THIS I BELIEVE…”

These words prompt various responses from all of us. Some think of Starbucks cups, others of Edward R. Murrow, and many of us remember a service at MPC where our fellow congregants told us what they held as core values. We will repeat This I Believe Sunday, August 5 at our 11 a.m. worship.  This year’s homilies will be delivered by Ellen Brown, Brian Johnson, and Lloyd Prince.

THINK ABOUT RETREATING!

It’s not too soon to mark off Oct. 19-21 on your calendar and plan to get away to cool and lovely Montreat, NC, for our fourth annual all-church retreat.  Each year, it’s been an event to remember for the whole family.  Watch for details in the next couple of months.
