MISSION CAMP
As part of their experience of learning about mission this past week, in addition to serving as Liturgists today, many of the pieces of the worship liturgy came out of the mission camp. We thank our participants for their leadership in worship! We invite you to Fellowship Hall following worship today to hear and see more about their week of service at Mission Camp. The attendees will be serving ice cream and sharing a brief program that will tell about their week. Many thanks to all the volunteers who made it happen!
“THIS I BELIEVE…”
These words prompt various responses from all of us. Some think of Starbucks cups, others of Edward R. Murrow, and many of us remember these services at MPC where our fellow congregants told us what they held as core values. We will repeat This I Believe next Sunday, August 5 at our 11 a.m. worship. This year’s homilies will be delivered by Ellen Brown, Brian Johnson, and Lloyd Prince.
REPORT ON YOUTH TRIP
Our MPC Youth and their advisors have completed their Mission and Montreat week. They will be hosting a hot dog lunch next Sunday, August 5 immediately following worship to report to their "stock holders" regarding their experiences. All are welcome in Fellowship Hall to hear about their trip!
WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CHRIS PETERS?
Did you know that Chris Peters, our Youth Director and Summer Seminary Intern, is a 2012 Montreat Youth Conference Co-Director? Until August 4, Chris is overseeing small groups and recreation events during two weeks of youth conferences that will be attended by 2,000 high school youth! Chris invites you to follow his journey online through a picture blog administrated by Chris and Rev. Diana Bell, the “Indoors” Co-Director, at http://perfectlyomega.wordpress.com/.
SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK OFF
August 6, many of the children of MPC start back to school! Here at Morningside, we begin our Sunday school year the following Sunday, August 12 at 9:45 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to this hour of fun, with light breakfast items. Crafts, dress-up corner, and Jonah’s whale promise lots of smiles. The kids will also make a dish to support Journey’s men shelter. Contact children’s education leaders Sue Ballay sueandjoe@att.net and Jill Davis jdavis@tuxox.com, if you can help.
THORNWELL OFFERING
On Sunday, August 12, MPC will collect a special offering for Thornwell Home for Children in South Carolina. This home serves children from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Please plan on giving generously in the envelopes decorated by Mission Camp kids!
LIBRARY RENOVATIONS
Contact Melinda today msandkam @morningsidepc.org if you would be interested in helping sort through and move library books one day in August. Books for adults will be moved to Session Room shelves for better accessibility and collection of children’s books will be expanded in resource room.
MPC YOUTH TO WELCOME 6TH GRADERS!
Are you a family with a 6th grader? Did you know this year begins your child's journey as a part of Morningside Youth? MPC Youth will host a Welcome Event for new 6th grade youth on Sunday, August 19 from 2 p.m.- 4 p.m. at church! We'll play some get-to-know-you and just plain fun games. Also mark your calendar for our Annual Youth and Parents Night on Sunday, September 9, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Both events will begin in the Welcome Center. Contact Chris Peters chrispeters @morningsidepc.org for more information.
CONGREGATIONAL LUNCH
It's time to prepare for our Congregational Lunch on August 26! We are looking for volunteers to help us set up, serve, and clean up during this wonderful time of fellowship. We're also looking for someone to help us coordinate with the caterer, so if you have experience or just an interest in helping out, please let us know. Contact Bonnie Daneker at bb_daneker@yahoo.com or 404.783.5678.

THINK ABOUT RETREATING!
It’s not too soon to mark off Oct. 19-21 on your calendar and plan to get away to cool and lovely Montreat, NC, for our fourth annual all-church retreat. Each year, it’s been an event to remember for the whole family. Watch for details in the next couple of months.

Adult Sunday School Class—9:45 a.m. in Room 201—The Short Course
What you didn’t know you could learn in Confirmation and why it matters for adults.
Next Sunday, August 5 we continue our discussion-based series that will take major themes from our Spring 2013 Youth Confirmation class, articulate those themes for adults, and frame them with questions related to personal and communal discipleship. Themes are complimentary but not exclusive – you are invited to join us as your schedule permits. This series, taught by Chris Peters, is designed as a refresher, primer, and thought-provoker for adults!
AUGUST 5—OUR STORY: A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO DISCIPLESHIP!
Using examples from the Book of Acts, we’ll discuss what we believe it means to be “church.”
Children’s Classes
Today the Pre-K class will hear Lions and Bears to learn how young David the shepherd protected the sheep in his care. The K-2 class will learn more about the time twelve-year-old Jesus astonished the teachers in the Temple with how much he knew.
