Adult Class, Room 201 -  What you didn't know you could learn in Confirmation and why it matters for adults.
This Sunday, we continue our discussion-based series that takes major themes from our Spring 2013 Youth Confirmation class, articulate those themes for adults, and frames them with questions related to personal and communal discipleship. You are invited to join us as your schedule permits. This series, taught by Chris Peters, is designed as a refresher, primer, and thought-provoker for adults!
AUGUST 5 - Our story: a funny thing happened on the way to discipleship! Using examples from the Book of Acts, we'll discuss what we believe it means to be "church."

Children: This Sunday preschool children will hear the story David and the Giant and wonder what it means to be brave. The K-2 children will respond to the story of Jesus blessing the children.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
When I say it's you I like, I'm talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed. - Fred Rogers

"THIS I BELIEVE..."
These words prompt various responses from all of us. Some think of Starbucks cups, others of Edward R. Murrow, and many of us remember these services at MPC where our fellow congregants told us what they held as core values. We will repeat This I Believe this Sunday, August 5 at our 11 a.m. worship. This year's homilies will be delivered by Ellen Brown, Brian Johnson, and Lloyd Prince.

REPORT ON YOUTH TRIP
Our MPC Youth and their advisors have completed their Mission and Montreatweek.  They will be hosting a hot dog lunch this Sunday, August 5 immediately following worship to report to their "stock holders" regarding their experiences.  All are welcome in Fellowship Hall to hear about their trip!

SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK OFF
August 6, many of the children of MPC start back to school!  Here at Morningside, we begin our Sunday school year the following Sunday, August 12 at 9:45 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to this hour of fun, with light breakfast items. Crafts, dress-up corner, and Jonah's whale promise lots of smiles. The kids will also make a dish to support Journey's men shelter. Contact children's education leaders Sue Ballay sueandjoe@att.net and Jill Davis jdavis@tuxox.com, if you can help.

SERVING DINNER AT JOURNEY
Sign up on the mission bulletin board or contact shepherd Curt Barrett todayemailcurt@mindpsring.com to bring a dish for the meal that MPC will provide for men staying at Journey on Sunday, August 12

LGBT & FRIENDS
All are invited to join LGBT & Friends for its first 2012-2013 meeting on Tuesday, August 21. LGBT & Friends welcomes all who wish to grow and be energized through Christian fellowship and service. Several discussion topics for meetings throughout the year will be discussed for group input.  The meeting, including dinner, on August 21 will be at the home of Jeff Peters and Michael Siedschlag, 1812 Meadowdale Ave NE, 30306 from 7 - 9 p.m.  RSVP to Michael Siedschlag (michaelmspnyc@yahoo.com or 404.254.0706).

SPRUCING UP SUNDAY SCHOOL ROOMS
Contact Melinda Sandkam if you have 1-2 hours anytime to clean rooms used for children's programs, organize supplies and prepare for a new school year.  All tasks will be tailored to each volunteer's availability.

LIBRARY RENOVATIONS
Contact Melinda today msandkam@morningsidepc.org if you would be interested in helping sort through and move library books one day in August.  Books for adults will be moved to Session Room shelves for better accessibility and collection of children's books will be expanded in the resource room.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE PRESBYTERY
Recent budget cuts at the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta have led to some staffing changes.  Volunteers are needed to greet visitors and answer phones.  If you are interested in supporting our Presbytery in this way, please contact Neema Cyrus-Franklin at neema@atlpcusa.org to learn more.
