"This I Believe"

Homilies delivered by

Ellen Brown, Brian Johnson, Lloyd Prince

Text: Hebrews 13:20-21

“THIS I BELIEVE…”

These words prompt various responses from all of us. Some think of Starbucks cups, others of Edward R. Murrow, and many of us remember these services at MPC where our fellow congregants told us what they held as core values. During worship this morning we will repeat This I Believe. This year’s homilies will be delivered by Ellen Brown, Brian Johnson, and Lloyd Prince.

REPORT ON YOUTH TRIP

Our MPC Youth and their advisors have completed their Mission and Montreat week.  They will be hosting a hot dog lunch today immediately following worship to report to their "stock holders" regarding their experiences.  All are welcome in Fellowship Hall to hear about their trip!

SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK OFF

Throughout August, many of the children of MPC start back to school!  Here at Morningside, we begin our Sunday School year next Sunday, August 12 at 9:45 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to this hour of fun, with light breakfast items. Crafts, dress-up corner, and Jonah’s whale promise lots of smiles. The kids will also make a dish to support Journey’s men shelter. Contact children’s education leaders Sue Ballay sueandjoe@att.net and Jill Davis jdavis@tuxox.com, if you can help.

THORNWELL OFFERING

Next Sunday, August 12, MPC will collect a special offering for Thornwell Home for Children in South Carolina. This home serves children from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Please plan on giving generously in the envelopes decorated by Mission Camp kids!

SERVING DINNER AT JOURNEY

Sign up on the mission bulletin board or contact shepherd Curt Barrett today emailcurt @mindpsring.com to bring a dish for the meal that MPC will provide for men staying at Journey on Sunday, August 12.

LIBRARY RENOVATIONS

Contact Melinda today msandkam @morningsidepc.org if you would be interested in helping sort through and move library books one day in mid-August.  Books for adults will be moved to Session Room shelves for better accessibility and collection of children’s books will be expanded in resource room.

SORT AT FOOD BANK

Sign up today on the mission bulletin board to sort donations at the Atlanta Community Food Bank on Saturday, August 18, 1-4 p.m.  Contact shepherd Tim Gargis tgargis@gmail.com with any questions.

ICM COLLECTION

Intown Collaborative Ministries provides a range of comprehensive services to our neighbors. ICM’s Food Pantry is supported by congregations, individuals, businesses, and organizations in 30306/30307 zip codes. MPC will collect canned meats – tuna, chicken, Vienna sausages (preferably pop-tops) – and crackers August 12-26.  Bring items to the Welcome Center baskets (and any plastic grocery bags, too).  Contact shepherd Nancy Collins ncollins0209@gmail.com with any questions.

MPC YOUTH TO WELCOME 6th GRADERS!

Are you a family with a 6th grader? Did you know this year begins your child's journey as a part of Morningside Youth? MPC Youth will host a Welcome Event for new 6th grade youth on Sunday, August 19 from 2 p.m.- 4 p.m. at church! We'll play some get-to-know-you and just plain fun games. Also mark your calendar for our Annual Youth and Parents Night on Sunday, September 9, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Both events will begin in the Welcome Center. Contact Chris Peters chrispeters @morningsidepc.org for more information.

LGBT & FRIENDS

All are invited to join LGBT & Friends for its first 2012-2013 meeting on Tuesday, August 21. LGBT & Friends welcomes all who wish to grow and be energized through Christian fellowship and service. Several discussion topics for meetings throughout the year will be discussed for group input.  The meeting, including dinner, on August 21 will be at the home of Jeff Peters and Michael Siedschlag, 1812 Meadowdale Ave NE, 30306 from 7 - 9 p.m.  RSVP to Michael michaelmspnyc@yahoo.com or 404.254.0706.

CONGREGATIONAL LUNCH

It's time to prepare for our Congregational Lunch on August 26! We are looking for volunteers to help us set up, serve, and clean up during this wonderful time of fellowship. We're also looking for someone to help us coordinate with the caterer, so if you have experience or just an interest in helping out, please let us know. Contact Bonnie Daneker at bb_daneker@yahoo.com or 404.783.5678.  Be sure to turn in the enclosed response card to the church office by Monday, August 20 to help us be good stewards by letting us know you will be attending.

SPRUCING UP SUNDAY SCHOOL ROOMS

Contact Melinda Sandkam if you have 1-2 hours anytime this Monday-Thursday to clean rooms used for children’s programs, organize supplies and prepare for a new school year.  All tasks will be tailored to each volunteer’s availability.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE PRESBYTERY

Recent budget cuts at the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta have led to some staffing changes. Volunteers are needed to greet visitors and answer phones.  If you are interested in supporting our Presbytery in this way, please contact Neema Cyrus-Franklin at neema@atlpcusa.org to learn more.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE

Adult Sunday School Class—9:45 a.m. in Room 201—The Short Course

What you didn’t know you could learn in Confirmation and why it matters for adults.

Next Sunday, August 12 we conclude our discussion-based series that will take major themes from our Spring 2013 Youth Confirmation class, articulate those themes for adults, and frame them with questions related to personal and communal discipleship. Themes are complimentary but not exclusive – you are invited to join us as your schedule permits. This series, taught by Chris Peters, is designed as a refresher, primer, and thought-provoker for adults!

AUGUST 12—OUR STORY PART 2: HOW DO WE LIVE WHAT WE SAY WE BELIEVE?

A group “faith statement” exercise will lead us into a discussion about how we live as Christians beyond the church doors.

Children’s Classes

Today preschool children will hear the story David and the Giant and wonder what it means to be brave. The K-2 children will respond to the story of Jesus blessing the children.
