WORSHIP AUGUST 26, 2012
21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Chris Peters
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!
People: I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long.
Leader: Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them.
People: Who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry.
Leader: The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.
People: The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
Leader: Let us worship God who creates us, sustains us and redeems us. - Psalm 146:1-2; 5-9

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 487 When Morning Gilds the Skies

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, you have loved us from generation to generation. You have shown your faithfulness more often than we can recall. The stories of the Bible tell us as of-ten as we will look of your steadfast mercy. Yet we live as though it would be better for us not to know. We live holding on to past hurts; we are not open to your new creation. We prefer the safety of what we know to the excitement of discipleship. Forgive us, we pray, and make us again as you would have us be. We make all of our prayers in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: God so loved the world that he sent his only son, so that whoever believes in him may not perish but have eternal life.
People: Indeed, God sent the son not into the world that the world might be con-demned but so that the world through him might be saved.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
- John 3:16-17

THE ANTHEM To God Be Joyful Mozart
To God be joyful, all hearts now be joyful! Alleluia. Know the Lord, that He is God. He hath made us and we are His. We are His flock, He the shepherd. O enter forth with thanksgiving, come with singing. Indeed, how good is the Lord. Alleluia.

THE SECOND LESSON John 6:56-69 (page 93 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONTo Whom Can We Go?” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 309 Of the Father’s Love Begotten

* THE CREED - from A Brief Statement of Faith (PCUSA)
We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and for-give us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for-ever. Amen.
