23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Chris Peters
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord!
People: I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the
company of the upright, in the congregation.
Leader: Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them,
People: full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness
endures forever.
Leader: He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;
People: the Lord is gracious and merciful.
Leader: Then let us worship God: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
- Psalm 111:1-4

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 356 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we know that we have sinned. We could catalogue the misdeeds
and ill thoughts we have indulged but what good would it do? You know what
we have done and what we have left undone. You know as well that we stand in
need of grace. Forgive us, we pray, for the sins that we have committed and the
sin with which we live. Give us comfort in the knowledge that your grace is
greater than anything we could ever do, and that nothing, indeed, nothing, will
separate us from your love made known in Jesus Christ. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things
present, nor things to come,
People: nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Romans 8:38-39

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Threes, fours & fives
are in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 003; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 001; 4th-5th grade in Room 005.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Matthew 22: 34-39 (page 24 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM Come, Peace of God Eugene Butler
Come, peace of God, and dwell again on earth. Come with the calm that hailed thy Prince's birth.
Come with the healing of thy gentle touch. Come peace of God, that this world needs so much. Break
every weapon forged in fires of hate, turn back the foe that would assail thy gate; where fields of strife lie
desolate and bare, take thy sweet flowers of peace and plant them there. Bring selfish lives from shadowlands
of loss into the radiance of the Savior's cross; where in that gift so precious yet so lone, life finds its
brotherhood and love its throne. Come blessed peace, and rule within our hearts.

THE SECOND LESSON Romans 7:7-25 (page 147 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON “Thinking Theologically About Modern Life” Sermon Series
I. - “The Sin Sermon” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 85 What Wondrous Love Is This

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from The Heidelberg Catechism, Questions 3 and 4
Leader: Where do you learn of your sin and its wretched consequences?
All: From the Law of God
Leader: What does the Law of God require of us?
All: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with
all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it, you shall love your neighbor
as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the
prophets.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy (I Will Arise) Walker's "Southern Harmony"
Quartet: Megan Mashburn, Tami Giusto, Gabe Couret, Brandon Odom

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 206 O Hear Our Cry, O Lord

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Canticle of the Turning (excerpt) Rory Cooney
Though the nations rage from age to age, we remember who holds us fast; God's mercy must deliver us
from the conqueror's crushing grasp. This saving word that our forebears heard is the promise which
holds us bound, 'til the spear and rod can be crushed by God, who is turning the world around.
