25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE GATHERING Shavon Starling-Louis
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Be Thou My Vision arr. Gordon Young
Charles Redmon, guest organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!
People: Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and
justice are the foundation of his throne.
Leader: Fire goes before him, and consumes his adversaries on every side.
People: His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles.
Leader: The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.
People: Let us worship God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. - Psalm 97:1-5
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 285 God, You Spin the Whirling Planets
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of holiness, our sin is before us. We know that we have not lived up to our
baptism. We have not forsaken the ways of sin. We have lingered in doubt and
fear and allowed them to shape who we are rather than taking our identity from
your eternal grace. Forgive us, we pray, and remake and renew us. Fashion from
our clay servants who give glory to you, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ we
pray. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is,
seated at the right hand of God.
People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth,
for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in
glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Colossians 3:1-4
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends
above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of
grateful praise.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Baptism for special classes. Threes, fours & fives are in
Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 003; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 001; 4th-5th grade in Room 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome these children into Christ’s
church. We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ.
THE CHORAL RESPONSE Baptized in Water Gaelic melody
THE FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Sarah Mercer Chatel
(page 157 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM I Sing the Almighty Power of God Trad. English, arr. Lovelace
I sing the almighty power of God, that made the mountains rise; that spread the flowing seas abroad, and built
the lofty skies. I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day; the moon shines full at his command, and all the stars obey. I sing the goodness of the Lord, that filled the earth with food; He formed the creatures with his word, and then pronounced them good. Lord, how thy wonders are displayed wherever I turn my eye: if I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky. There’s not a plant or flower below that makes Thy glories known; and clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from thy throne; while all that borrows life from Thee is ever in Thy care, and everywhere that we can be, Thou, God, art present there.
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 12:41-48 (page 70 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “Thinking Theologically About Modern Life” Sermon Series
III.- “The Money Sermon” Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 333 Seek Ye First
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Veni Sponsa Christi (The Father Calls You) Christopher Uehlein, OSB
