WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 30, 2012
26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

THE INTROIT I Will Praise God Vicki H. Wright
Treble Choir and Chancel Choir Ensemble
(Rebecca Shipley, director)

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; sing the glory of his name.
People: Give to him glorious praise. Say to God, “How awesome are
your deeds! Because of your great power, your enemies cringe
before you.
Leader: All the earth worships you; they sing praises to you, sing praises to your name.”
People: We have come to worship God, who creates us, redeems us and
sustains us. - Psalm 66:1-4

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 478 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, you have called us, and we confess we do not know sometimes
what that means. Where you have been clear that you want our whole selves, we
have been held back, thinking instead you might be satisfied with a half-measure.
Where you have told us what is required of us, we have substituted easy piety. So
forgive us when we cling to our own ideas about what your kingdom looks like
and open our minds to your vision for us. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray.
Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form
of God did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied
himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in
human form, he humbled himself, and became obedient to the point of death, even
death on a cross.
People: Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him the name that is
above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Philippians 2:5-11

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 579)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Threes, fours & fives

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Matthew 22:34-40 (page 24 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM Set Me as a Seal Upon Your Heart David Childs
Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm. For love is as strong as death. Many waters
cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it.

THE SECOND LESSON 1 Corinthians 13 (page 164 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON “Thinking Theologically About Modern Life” Sermon Series
IV.- “The Sex Sermon” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 335 Though I May Speak

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Intermezzo in E Major, Op. 116, No. 6 Johannes Brahms

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 344 Christ of the Upward Way

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE The Greatest of These Jane Marshall
Faith and hope, and love we see, joining hand in hand, agree; but the greatest of the three,
love.
