WORSHIP OCTOBER 14, 2012
28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his
handiwork.
People: Day to day pours forth speech and night declares knowledge.
Leader: There is no speech nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice
goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
People: The heavens are telling the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims
his handiwork. Let us worship God!
Leader: Let us worship God, creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 19:1-4
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 473 For the Beauty of the Earth (verses 1 through 5)
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, you are from everlasting to everlasting. You, the creator of heaven
and earth extend from the furthest reaches of the universe to the depths of Sheol.
Yet in our finitude, we forget from whom our blessings flow. We blur the lines
between creator and creation and think that we are the authors of our own blessings.
But you alone are eternal, you alone are the source of all life and all good.
We are chastened, and we ask forgiveness. Return us to your marvelous image,
remind us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and call forth from us the
commitment you would have us bring, through Jesus the Christ we pray. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce
impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are
self-controlled, upright and Godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the
manifestation of the glory of our great God and savior, Jesus Christ.
People: He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all
iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for
good deeds.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. - Titus 2:11-14
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 210)

God, to endless years the same.

THE MINUTE MESSAGE Anthony Owens
THE FIRST LESSON Luke 10:25-28 (page 67 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE ANTHEM All Good Gifts William Sisson
We plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand. He
sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain. All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above. Thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for all His love. God only is the maker of all things near and far. He paints the wayside flower, He lights the evening star. The wind and waves obey Him, by Him the birds are fed. Much more to us, His children, He gives our daily bread. We thank you, our creator, for all things bright and good, the seed-time and the harvest, our life, our health, our food. Accept the gifts we offer for all your love imparts, and what you most would treasure, our humble thankful hearts.
THE SECOND LESSON Genesis 1:24-31 (page 1 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE SERMON “Thinking Theologically About Modern Life” Sermon Series
VI.- “The Earth Sermon” Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 293 This Is My Father’s World
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
