29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE GATHERING Chris Peters
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Our Father in Heaven Georg Bóhm
Sarah Martin, guest organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Let my whole being bless the Lord. O Lord my God, you are very great.
People: You are clothed in glory and grandeur! You wear light like a robe;
you open the skies like a curtain.
Leader: You build your house on the waters; you make the clouds your chariot, going
around on the wings of the wind.
People: Lord, you have done so many things! You made them all so wisely!
The earth is full of your creations!
Leader: Let us worship our God with our whole being! Amen. -Psalm 104:1-3, 24
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 417 Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy and ever creating God, you called us to be your disciples and showed us
how to serve. Yet, we confess that we misunderstand you. We do not know how
to live in the community of God you invite us to receive. We have not served you
or our neighbors the way you taught us. We often put what we want and our own
comfort before the needs of others. We fail to fully extend your love and hospitality.
Bear with us God. Help us to better understand the love you have for us. Help
us to find the will, courage, and imagination to truly invite others into your beloved
community. With Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ.
People: And Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us,
Christ prays for us.
Leader: Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun.
Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. -Romans 8:34; 2 Cor. 5:17
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Threes, fours & fives
are in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 003; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 001; 4th-5th grade in Room 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE MINUTE MESSAGE Roy Simpson
THE FIRST LESSON Job 38:1-7 David York
(page 458 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM My Shepherd Will Supply My Need arr. Virgil Thomson
Gene Martin, guest conductor
My shepherd will supply my need, Jehovah is his name. In pastures fresh he makes me feed beside the
living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back when I forsake his ways. He leads me for his mercy’s
sake in paths of truth and grace. When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay. One
word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, doth still my
table spread. My cup with blessings over flows, thine oil anoints my head. The sure provisions of my God
attend me all my days. O may thy house be my abode and all my work be praise. There would I find a
settled rest, while others go and come. No more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home.
THE SECOND LESSON Mark 10:35-45 (page 44 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “We Do What We Are Able” Drew Stockstill
* THE HYMN 426 Lord, Speak to Me, That I May Speak (verses 1 through 5)
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY “Andante” from Sonata VI Felix Mendelssohn
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 435 We All Are One in Mission
