WORSHIP NOVEMBER 18, 2012
33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY

THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us.
People: That God’s way may be known upon the earth, God’s saving power
among all nations.
Leader: Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
People: Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples
with equity and guide the nations upon earth.
Leader: Let the people praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
-Psalm 67: 1-5

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 555 Now Thank We All Our God

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, you have breathed life into our fragile bodies, you have showered
us with love and grace that we cannot understand. Yet, we blandly give you
praise, we ignore your presence in our midst, and we hold back the blessings you
have asked us to share with others. We confess that we do not know what it
means to follow you. You have shown us the glory and wonder of your church,
yet all we see is the building’s large stones. Forgive us, O God, for failing to see
creation as you see it, with hope and wonder, and for stifling your creative work
in the world. Give us the courage and imagination to serve your creation as you
have taught us and to live into the grace you have shown us, with great thanksgiving!
With Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance,
People: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
Leader: He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead
to sin, and alive to all that is good.
People: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
-1 Timothy 1:15; 1 Peter 2:24

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 579)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Threes, fours & fives
are in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 003; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 001; 4th-5th grade in Room 005.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Mark 13:1-8 (page 47 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM Sing to the Lord of Harvest Steurlein, arr. Wetzler
Sing to the Lord of harvest, sing songs of love and praise; with joyful hearts and voices your alleluias
raise. By Him the rolling waters in fruitful order move. Sing to the Lord of harvest a song of grateful
love. By Him the clouds give richness, the deserts bloom and spring; the hills leap up in gladness, the valleys
praise and sing. He filleth with His fullness all things with large increase; He crowns the year with
goodness, with plenty, and with peace. To God, the gracious Father, who makest all things good. To
Christ, who, when we wandered, restored us with His blood. And to the Holy Spirit, who doth upon us
pour His blessed grace and mercy, be praise forevermore.

THE SECOND LESSON 1 Samuel 1:4-20 (page 233 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMONLonging for Thanksgiving” Drew Stockstill

* THE HYMN 309 Of the Father’s Love Begotten

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY O, That I Had a Thousand Voices Paul Manz

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 559 We Gather Together

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Of the Father’s Love Begotten arr. Willcocks
Sing, ye heights of heaven, his praises; angels and archangels, sing! Wheresoe’er ye be, ye faithful, let
your joyous anthems ring. Every tongue his name confessing, countless voices answering evermore and
evermore.
