WORSHIP NOVEMBER 25, 2012
CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY

THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you. Drew Stockstill
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?
People: He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people.
Leader: He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the Lord!
People: Praise the Lord! We have come to worship God: Father, Son and
Holy Ghost. - Psalm 113:5-9

* THE HYMN 151 Crown Him with Many Crowns

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of all time and space, we may declare readily that Christ is king, but do we
know what that declaration means? Are we prepared to place our trust wholly in
Jesus? Will we order our lives according to his teaching? Would we give up
lesser idols that offer us illusions of security? How can we trust what we do not
see, O Lord? Yet, Christ is king. Our lips make this affirmation perhaps hesitantly,
but it is the proclamation we have to make. So strengthen us to affirm this. Forgive
us when we cannot trust. Forgive us when we do not live according to
Christ’s teaching. Forgive us when we substitute idolatry for living faith. And in
forgiving us again, renew us, offer us hope and guide us to follow our king, Jesus
the Christ, in whom we have placed our trust. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: “For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us
who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
People: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the
discerning I will thwart.’
Leader: For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger
than human strength.” Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. - 1 Corinthians 1:18-19; 25

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends
above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of
grateful praise.

THE ANTHEM Blessed Art Thou, O Lord of Our Fathers Martin Shaw
Quartet: Megan Mashburn, Tami Giusto, Gabe Couret, Brandon Odom
Blessed art Thou, O Lord of our fathers, praised and exalted above all for ever. Blessed art Thou for the
name of Thy majesty. Blessed art Thou in the temple of Thy holiness. Blessed art Thou that beholdest the
depths, and dwellest between the Cherubim. Blessed art Thou on the glorious throne of Thy kingdom.
Blessed art Thou in the firmament of heaven. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as
it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE SECOND LESSON John 18:33-40 (page 106 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONChrist the King” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 306 Fairest Lord Jesus

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY The Church’s One Foundation arr. John Innes

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 145 Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart!

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Praise to the Lord arr. Alfred Whitehead
Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises
before Him! Let the Amen sound from His people again. Gladly for aye we adore Him. Amen.
