THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, we know academically that Christ is Lord of all creation, present
at the start, sustaining in the Holy Spirit all that have breath. We know
this, yet we forget what it means. We forget that it means that Christ is Lord, not
cancer cells; Christ is Lord, not racism. Christ is Lord, not economic forces;
Christ is Lord, not war and death. We know all these things, yet even knowing,
there are moments when we are afraid. Forgive our failure to trust in you.
Comfort us in the knowledge that you are above all and in all. Help us to repent,
that is, to turn from fear to trust. We ask in the name of Christ, who is
Lord of all. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form
of God did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied
himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness. And being found
in human form, he humbled himself, and became obedient to the point of death, even
death on a cross.
People: Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him the name that is
above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Leader: We confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and sin and death have no power over us.
People: We believe the promise of the Gospel: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
- Philippians 2:5-11

THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 65:17-25 (page 654 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM How Beauteous Are Their Feet Abraham Wood
How beauteous are their feet who stand on Zion’s hill! Who bring salvation on their tongues, and
words of peace reveal. How charming is their voice! How sweet the tidings are! Zion, behold thy
Savior King. He reigns and triumphs here.
(This anthem is representative of Christmas music published in the American colonies in the late 18th
century. Such pieces appeared in the typical tune books of the time.)

glory of your name:
