WORSHIP DECEMBER 16, 2012
THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you. Chris Peters
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH The James Family and Gail Kitchens
* Unison Prayer:
God of grace, ever faithful to your promises, the earth rejoices in the hope of
our Savior’s coming and looks forward with longing to his return. Prepare our
hearts to receive him when he comes, for he is Lord of all time and space. Amen.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 11 O Lord, How Shall I Meet You?

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we confess that it is hard to maintain our focus on Jesus when
there is so much competition for our attention. It is hard to remember that you
call us to a way of life that is distinctive, when everywhere we turn there is an
easier alternative. We confess that we are tempted by slick consumerism and we
succumb to confusing wants with needs. We know we are called to a way of life
that remembers the Christ-child and all he came to show us. So forgive our sin,
we pray, and order our lives that we may indeed follow you. We pray it in Jesus’
name and for his sake. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing: it is the
gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one might boast.
People: For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works,
which God prepared before hand to be our way of life.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Ephesians 2:8-10

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 23)
Gloria in excelsis Deo; Gloria in excelsis Deo.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST

are in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 003; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 001; 4th-5th grade in Room 005.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Zephaniah 3:14-20 (page 826 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM In the Bleak Midwinter Gustav Holst
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone. Snow had
fallen, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter long ago. Angels and archangels may have gathered there.
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air. But only his mother in her maiden bliss worshipped the Beloved
with a kiss. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb. If I were
a Wise Man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him, give my heart.

THE SECOND LESSON Luke 1:39-55 (page 53 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONWhat to Do?” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 13 Prepare the Way

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime Paul Manz
