WORSHIP JANUARY 20, 2013
3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you. Drew Stockstill
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I lift up my eyes to the hills – from where will my help come? My help comes from
the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
People: He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber;
he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
Leader: The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall
not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
People: The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord
will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and
forevermore.
Leader: Let us worship God, who creates us, redeems us and sustains us. Amen.
- Psalm 121
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 420 God of Grace and God of Glory (verses 1, 2, and 4)
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we have heard the stories of your marvelous deeds. We have
been told of miracles and signs. We have read of redemption and reconciliation.
There is no shortage of witness to who you are and who you would have us be in
light of your revelation. Yet our discipleship often is halting, slow to start and
meager once started. We need a vision of salvation that will sustain us into our
uncertain futures. So we pray once more that you will forgive our sin and give
us such a vision to live as you created us to live; as you redeemed us to live. We
pray it in Jesus’ name, and for his sake. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with Scripture -
“I believed and so I spoke” - so we also believe, and so we speak, because we know
that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will raise us also with Jesus, and
will bring us with you into his presence.
People: Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and
more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
Leader: Believe the promise of the gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - 2 Corinthians 4:13-1
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST

THE FIRST LESSON 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 (page 163 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE ANTHEM Wait on the Lord Willis L. Barnett
Brandon Odom, baritone
The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeks his will. They that wait patiently
shall find peace. Wait, I say, on the Lord. Believe his holy Word. He shall strengthen thy heart.
They that wait on the Lord God will renew their strength. They shall soar like angels with wings; they
shall run and never become weary; they that wait patiently shall find peace.
THE SECOND LESSON John 2:1-11 (page 87 in the pew Bible, NT)
* THE HYMN 356 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Pastorale Ernst Pepping
