WORSHIP FEBRUARY 17, 2013
1ST SUNDAY OF LENT
THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you. Drew Stockstill
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it;
for he has founded it on the seas and established it on the rivers.
People: Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord’ and who shall stand in his
holy place?
Leader: Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not live up their souls
to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.
People: They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the
God of their salvation.
Leader: Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
Let us worship God, who creates, redeems and sustains us. Psalm 24:1-6
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 457 I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art
(verses 1 through 4)
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God, we are sinners. We know that sin permeates our world, resulting
in brokenness and pain. We know that we are complicit in the suffering our sin
causes. Temptation has lured us and we have turned our hearts against the grace
you have given us. Forgive us, we pray, and turn our hearts back to you. Empower
us to live as forgiven and redeemed people, for it is in the name of your
son, our savior that we pray. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,
People: But we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are,
yet without sin.
Leader: Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive
mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. - Hebrews 4:15-16
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 91:1-2; 9-16 (page 518 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM Lord Jesus Christ, Be Present Now Byrd, arr. Hopson
Lord Jesus Christ, be present now. Our hearts in true devotion bow, Thy spirit send with
grace divine. O may Thy truth within us shine. Unseal our lips to sing Thy praise, our souls
to Thee in worship raise. Make strong our faith, increase our light. O may we know Thy
name aright.
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 4:1-13 (page 57 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “Wilderness” Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 363 I Want Jesus to Walk with Me
* THE NICENE CREED (Ecumenical)
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of
the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten,
not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us
and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit
and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose
again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated on
the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from
the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and
apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We
look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Adagio in A Minor J.S. Bach
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 284 O God, What You Ordain Is Right
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (Rockingham) Edward Miller
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.
