WORSHIP FEBRUARY 24, 2013
2ND SUNDAY OF LENT

THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you. Drew Stockstill
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

THE INTROIT Feed My Lambs Sleeth
I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light Thomerson
Cherub Choir (Rebecca Shipley, director)

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!
People: Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness
and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Leader: Fire goes before him, and consumes his adversaries on every side.
People: His lightenings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles.
Leader: The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.
People: Let us worship God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
- Psalm 97:1-5

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 488 The God of Abraham Praise

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of the Covenant, you alone are holy. You alone are greater than our
minds can conceive. You alone are the beginning and end. You are a holy mystery
beyond explanation, and worthy of worship. We confess that we fail to
worship you as you are. We blur the distinction between creator and creation
and we lapse into idolatry as we seek to impose our image of who you are in
place of holy mystery. Forgive us, we pray and open our minds to new realities
of who you are and how you extend grace. Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: This is the message that we heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is
light and in him is no darkness at all.
People: If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking
in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true. But if we walk in
the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one
another and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - 1 John 1:5-7

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE ANTHEM Ave Verum Corpus W.A. Mozart
(sung in Latin)
Jesus, Word of God incarnate, born of the Virgin Mary, on the cross his flesh was torn to
atone for our sins. Cleanse your people by your blood and water. Be for us our example, even
at the time of death.

THE SECOND LESSON Genesis 15:1-12 (page 11 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMONPromises” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 251 Your Faithfulness, O Lord, Is Sure

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

the heart of the sea, though the waters roar and foam, we will not fear.
