WORSHIP MARCH 10, 2013
4TH SUNDAY OF LENT

THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you. Drew Stockstill
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into his presence with thanksgiving.
People: Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Leader: Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him,
bless his name.
People: For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his
faithfulness to all generations.
Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 100

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 356 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we know that we are your creation. Made in your image, we are
called to reflect your goodness. We know that in Jesus Christ, you have redeemed
our brokenness and renewed our spirits. And yet, we know also that we
are plagued by nagging doubts; perplexed by trying circumstances. We know
that despite our best efforts, and sometimes due to our worst efforts, we have
sinned. So we ask your forgiveness and mercy. Bring us back into right relationship
with you that we may witness to joy, for the sake of our crucified and risen
Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. The old has passed away; the
new has come.
People: All this is from God, who reconciled himself to us through Christ and
has given us the ministry of reconciliation.
Leader: That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their
trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. Believe
the Promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, We are forgiven! - 2 Corinthians 5:17-19

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)

THE CHORAL RESPONSE Child of Blessing, Child of Promise Copes

THE FIRST LESSON Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 (page 73 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM The Lord Is My Shepherd John Rutter
Dane Philipsen, oboe
The Lord is my shepherd; therefore can I lack nothing. He shall feed me in a green pasture, and lead
me forth beside the waters of comfort. He shall convert my soul and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness,
for his Name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear
no evil; for thou art with me: Thy rod and thy staff comfort me. Thou shalt prepare a table for me
against them that trouble me: Thou hast anointed my head with oil and my cup shall be full. But Thy loving
kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

THE SECOND LESSON 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 (page 170 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONInto the Far Country” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 387 Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Sinfonia (from Cantata BWV 156) J.S. Bach

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 399
We Walk by Faith and Not by Sight

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (Rockingham) Edward Miller
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.
