WORSHIP MARCH 17, 2013
5TH SUNDAY OF LENT

THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you. Drew Stockstill
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it;
for he has founded it on the seas and established it on the rivers.
People: Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord and who shall stand in
his holy place?
Leader: Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls
to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.
People: They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from
the God of their salvation.
Leader: Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the
God of Jacob. Let us worship God: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. - Psalm 24:1-6

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 220 All People That on Earth Do Dwell

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, on our best days we are still sinners. We still take more than we
need. We still hold more than we ought; we still live mostly for ourselves. We
have fallen short of loving you and loving our neighbors. We are not malicious,
Lord, only complacent. But you are not a God of excuses and qualifiers. Forgive
our complacency and inaction. Forgive our failures and misdeeds. Have mercy
on us and make us whole. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound?
People: By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it?
Leader: Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus
were baptized into his death?
People: Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death,
so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the
father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
Leader: Believe the promise of the gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Romans 6:1-4

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Philippians 3:4b-14 (page 187 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM I See His Blood Upon the Rose Hugh S. Roberton
I see his blood upon the rose, and in the stars the glory of his eyes; his body gleams amid eternal
snows; his tears fall from the skies. I see his face in every flower; the thunder and the singing of the
birds are but his voice, and, carven by his power, rocks are his written words. All pathways by his
feet are worn, his strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea, his crown of thorns is twined with every
thorn, his cross is every tree.

THE SECOND LESSON Isaiah 43:16-21 (page 632 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMON
Rivers in the Desert” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 293 This Is My Father’s World

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Brief Statement of Faith, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of
God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by
word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted,
eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and
believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was
crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the
world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the
power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Aria on the Hymn-tune “Jewels” Dale Wood

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 361 How Firm a Foundation (verses 1 through 5)

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE When I Survey the Wondrous Cross arr. Martin
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.
