WORSHIP MARCH 24, 2013
PALM SUNDAY

THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you. Drew Stockstill
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

THE INTROIT Lo, He Comes John Horman
Lenten Youth Ensemble
Rebecca Shipley, director
Lo, He comes! Sing we "Hosanna" - let us sing to the Lord! Enter his gates with shouts of
thanksgiving, into his courts with songs of praise. Come, let us march in glad procession. Loud
Hosannas now we raise. Open your heart and welcome the Savior. Join with the song that has no end.

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it.
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches
that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who
followed were shouting:
People: Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David. Hosanna
in highest heaven! - Mark 11:7-11
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 88
All Glory, Laud and Honor

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we confess that we have followed you closely, saying the right things,
murmuring our assent in all the right places, shouting acclamations at all the right
times, but our discipleship is lacking. When the time comes for hard declarations in
the face of the demon possessed powers of this world, our hosannas fade into “I
know the man not.” Forgive us, we pray, for our failure to be disciples willing to follow
you into all the earth. We pray this in the name of Jesus, and for his sake, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as
something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being
born in human likeness.
People: And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became
obedient, to the point of death – even death on a cross.
Leader: Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him the name that is above
every name,
People: so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, in heaven and on
earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Philippians 2:6-11

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 416)
Laud and honor to the Father, laud and honor to the Son, laud and honor to the Spirit,
ever three and ever one; one in might and one in glory while unending ages run.

THE HYMN 85 What Wondrous Love Is This

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Lacrimosa (from Requiem) W. A. Mozart
(sung in Latin)
That day of tears and mourning, when from the ashes shall arise all humanity to be judged. Spare us
by your mercy, Lord; gentle Lord Jesus, grant them eternal rest. Amen.

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 100 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
