WORSHIP APRIL 21, 2013
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I know that the Lord is great; our Lord is above all gods.
People: Whatever the Lord pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the
seas and all deeps.
Leader: He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth; he makes lightnings
for the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
People: We have come to worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer.
Amen. - Psalm 135:5-7

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 288 I Sing the Mighty Power of God

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, we have turned our eyes from your goodness. Where you have been
exceedingly gracious to us, we have seen only hardness. Where you have acted
on our behalf, we see instead coincidence. Where our prayers were not answered
to our satisfaction, we assume indifference. Our hearts are hardened to the mystery
of your presence among us. Forgive us we pray, and open our eyes to all of
your blessings. Make us aware of the gracious benefits you have given us, and always
keep us in your care. It is in the name of Jesus Christ that we pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing:
it is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one might boast.
People: For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works,
which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Ephesians 2:8-10

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 579)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

THE MINUTE FOR MISSION Eleanor Attwood

THE FIRST LESSON Revelation 21:1-6 (page 244 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM And All the Earth Shall Own Him Lord (“Jerusalem”) Parry, arr. Bock
And did those feet in ancient time walk upon Israel’s mountains green? And did the Christ of heaven
come down? Was God in flesh both heard and seen? And did He die to prove His love? And did He rise
more powerful still? And was His rule on earth started there upon Golgotha’s tragic hill? Bring me my
bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds unfold! Bring me my
Chariot of Fire! I will not cease to spread His light: My faith a shield, His Word my sword: Till Christ,
my God, is crowned as King, and all the earth shall own Him Lord.
- original text by William Blake, adapted by Bryan Leech

THE SECOND LESSON Acts 11:1-18 (page 122 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONEven To the Gentiles” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 309 Of the Father’s Love Begotten

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin
Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended
into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of
the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Lord Jesus Christ, Be Present Now J.S. Bach
