WORSHIP MAY 12, 2013
SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the
faithful.
People: Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with
tambourine and lyre.
Leader: For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with victory.
People: Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their couches.
Leader: Let us worship God: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. - Psalm 149: 1, 3-5

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 483 Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, we are your people. Yet we do not always live as though this were
true. You love us beyond our imagination and we are grateful, but not grateful
enough to risk meeting your expectations. Where you would have us act, we
have waited. Where you would have us show kindness, we have allowed barriers
of our own making to rise between ourselves and those you would have us serve.
As we remember our baptism, forgive our sin, we pray, and call us once more to
live as your people. Remind us of the covenant made at this font so that we may
have strength to be your disciples. We pray all these things in the name of Jesus.
Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: What is your only comfort, in life and in death?
People: That I belong, body and soul, in life and in death, not to myself, but to my
faithful savior, Jesus Christ.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. (from the Heidelberg Catechism)

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends
above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of
grateful praise.

THE CHORAL RESPONSE Gloria Tibi Domine Greg Gilpin

THE FIRST LESSON Acts 24:16-24 Robert Gray

THE ANTHEM In Heavenly Love Abiding Bob Burroughs
In heavenly love abiding, no task my heart shall fear; and safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid; but God is round about me, and can I be dismayed?
Wherever He may guide me, no want shall turn me back; my Shepherd is beside me, and nothing
can I lack. His wisdom ever waketh, His sight is never dim; He knows the way He taketh, and I will walk
with Him. Green pastures are before me, which yet I have not seen. Bright skies will soon be over me. My
life I cannot measure, the path of life is free; my Savior has my treasure, and He will walk with me.

THE SECOND LESSON Acts 16:25-34 (page 137 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONSong of the Cell” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 543 Abide with Me

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin
Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended
into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of
the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYE
R
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
