WORSHIP MAY 26, 2013
TRINITY SUNDAY

THE GATHERING Shavon Starling-Louis
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
People: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and
be glad.
Leader: O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.
People: I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from
all my fears.
Leader: Look to him, and be radiant, so your faces shall never be ashamed.
People: We have come to worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer.
- Psalm 34:1-5

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 138 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, you are the good master. You alone can do exceedingly abundantly
more than we could ever ask or imagine. To you alone belongs all glory and honor
in the church forevermore. And yet, too often we praise you as though you are
commonplace and ordinary. Too often we fail to register your goodness and
mercy. And far too often, we are mute where good words might make all the dif-
ference. Forgive our willingness to worship you in thought but not in deed. Open
our lips that we may sing your praise. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is,
seated at the right hand of God.
People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth,
for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in
glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Colossians 3:1-4

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends
above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of
grateful praise.

THE ANTHEM Prayer of Saint Richard of Chichester Malcolm Archer
Thanks be to thee, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which thou hast given us, for all the pains
and insults which thou hast borne for us. O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know
thee more clearly, follow thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly. Amen.
THE SECOND LESSON Romans 5:1-5 (page 145 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONEndurance, Character, Hope ” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 366 Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Vir-
gin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he de-
scended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of
the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Beach Spring Sacred Harp, arr. Rachel Porter
