SPECIAL JUNE CONCERT AT MPC
This afternoon at 4 p.m., the Atlanta Opera’s High School Opera Institute singers, led by Walter Huff, will return to our sanctuary, and we’re invited. This will be the third year MPC has welcomed the free ‘graduation’ concert of these young vocalists that culminates the 2012-2013 High School Opera educational program and features young singers from public and private schools throughout the area. The program will offer selections by Handel, Purcell, Mozart, Bizet, Puccini, Copland, and others. Some previous alumni will also perform.
JOURNEY SHELTER
Please help us serve the Journey Shelter by contacting shepherd Tamara Nix if you can help serve this evening at 6 p.m.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
VBS June 17-21 Meet at the Marketplace is only one week away! See requests on the bulletin board across from the office that include some recycled items such as newspapers and old herbs or spices and others that are just loans for our Marketplace props - such as blankets, material, clay pots and pitchers. Help us stock our village marketplace. See donation requests in the Welcome Center for snack supplies. Bring supplies no later than next Sunday, June 16. Contact Melinda Sandkam msandkam @morningsidepc.org to volunteer anytime, including VBS workdays Thursday, June 13 (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.), anytime Saturday, June 15, and final set-up Sunday, June 16 (2-5 p.m.).
SING WITH THE CHOIR
Ever wanted to sing with Morningside's Chancel Choir, but didn't think you had the time or the training? Well, here's your chance to join them for "Sing with the Choir" Sunday. About 10 guests will be chosen (first come, first serve) by emailing
music@morningsidepc.org with your name. Those singing must attend one rehearsal on Wed., June 26 at 7:30 p.m. and arrive on Sunday, June 30 at 9:30 a.m., for a warmup/rehearsal before the 11:00 service. Wear a robe, process with the choir, and sing a hymn arrangement, plus a closing response. If you can carry a tune, you're in!
SPECIAL GUEST FOR ADULT EDUCATION
All are encouraged to join the Adult Sunday School class at 9:45 a.m. June 23 & 30 for a two part series led by special guest Melanie Johnson called 'Esther: Behind the Mask.' Melanie Johnson is a recent graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. student at Claremont School of Theology. She will guide the class in the first week through the Old Testament book of Esther's "revealed" story and in the second week explore Esther's hidden meanings. This class meets in room 201 and welcomes all. No special knowledge required. No questions are bad questions.
TEENS AT MONTREAT
Please keep MPC rising 9th graders Nicholas Lazzaro and Taylor Morton in your prayers this week as they attend Montreat High School Camp with leaders Brian Johnson and Drew Stockstill. May they all have safe travels and wonderful youth experiences! Eight more MPC youth will be attending Asheville Youth Mission in July.
MISSION CAMP
Our fifth year of It's Not All About Me Mission Camp is July 22-26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with an overnight adventure to Len Foote Hike Inn on Thursday. This hands-on experience with mission includes outreach to children and seniors, the environment and animals, and many who are facing hunger or homelessness here in Atlanta. With daily outings, we need lots of volunteers and also dedicated overnight leaders who are willing to hike in and out to Len Foote. Contact Melinda to volunteer.
SUMMER YOGA
Morningside will begin summer classes this Tuesday, June 11 and continue each Tuesday through July 16. Veteran Yoga teacher, Pam Sharpe, invites you to join her fabulous band of students to explore the joys and benefits of a gentle yoga practice. Bend, extend, strengthen, and relax on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. in Room 201. All you need is comfy clothes. For more information contact Pam at yogapam@bellsouth.net.
SIX STAR
Six Star Refugee Partnership is in urgent need of a used vehicle for their newest family from the Congo. This is a wonderful couple coming to us via St. John's Lutheran Church, and the husband desperately needs transportation to his night job in Gwinnett County. If you can help, please contact Holly Campbell hollycampbell1@gmail.com.
SEVERE WEATHER RESPONSE
In light of recent severe weather nationwide, please support Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. PDA is known for its long-term planning in recovery efforts as evidenced by on-going work for New Orleans, Haiti, Japan, and Northeast U.S. after super-storm Sandy. You may donate directly by going to www.pcusa.org or you may donate through Morningside by marking your check for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. As always, we will continue to look for ways to share God's love following these tragic events.
