WORSHIP JUNE 9, 2013
10TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!
People: I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life
long.
Leader: The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up
those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.
People: The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow
but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
Leader: Let us worship God who creates us, sustains us and redeems us. - Psalm 146:1; 5-9

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 263 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, our sin is before us. Where you have shown us your kingdom, we
have been quick to move on, to dismiss miracles and teachings and return to things
as usual. Where you have taught us by example, we have not allowed those teachings
to become our way of life. We linger in the shadows where you have called us
to light. Forgive us we pray, and transform us. Allow our lives to reflect the light of
your grace for all people, in order that we may be bringers of hope to all whom we
meet. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: “For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us
who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
People: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the
discerning I will thwart.’
Leader: For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger
than human strength.” Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
- 1 Corinthians 1:18-19; 25

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.

oh I need Thee. Every hour I need Thee. Oh bless me now my Savior, I come to Thee.
THE SECOND LESSON
Luke 7:11-17 (page 61 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONA PR Dream Come True” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 228 O Thou, My Soul, Return in Peace (verses 1 through 4)

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - Excerpted from The Confession of 1967
and amended for inclusive language

"The life, death, resurrection and promised coming of Jesus Christ has set the pattern
for the church's mission. Christ's human life involves the church in the common life
of humankind. His service to humanity commits the church to work for every form
of human well-being. His suffering makes the church sensitive to all the sufferings of
humankind so that it sees the face of Christ in the faces of people in every kind of
need. His crucifixion discloses to the church God's judgment on the inhumanity of
humans to one another and the awful consequences of its own complicity in injustice.
In the power of the risen Christ and the hope of his coming, the church sees the
promise of God's renewal of the common life of humanity in society and of God's victory
over all wrong. The church follows this pattern in the form of its life and in the
method of its action. So to live and serve is to confess Christ as Lord.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY On the Willows Stephen Schwartz
Gabriel Couret, John Wingert, Brandon Odom - soloists
Handbell Choir (Jeff Peters, director)
On the willows there, we hung up our lyres; for our captors there required of us songs, and our tormentors
mirth. Sing us one of the songs of Zion, but how can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 332 Live Into Hope

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Immortal, Invisible (excerpt) Eric Thiman
