WORSHIP JUNE 23, 2013
12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God,
the creator of the ends of the earth.
People: He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless.
Leader: Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted;
but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.
People: They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not
be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Leader: Let us worship the everlasting God: creator, redeemer and sustainer.
- Isaiah 40:28-31

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 446 Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we think that we do not have demons, or we think that you are
powerless to deliver us from them. We see demons elsewhere but do not see evil
in ourselves. We drive by, walk away, keep on going, thinking that there is
nothing we can do. Our faith seems not enough to sustain us. But the truth, O
God, is as fearful to us as our fears: you do have the power to change us and heal
us. So we pray that you will break in upon us even if we lack the strength to ask
it, and cast out our demons and forgive our sins, through Jesus Christ our Lord
we pray it. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view, even
though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in
that way.
People: So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has
passed away; see, everything has become new!
Leader: All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us
the ministry of reconciliation. Believe the promise of the Gospel!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - 2 Corinthians 5:16-18

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 341)
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

THE CHORAL RESPONSE Spirit of the Living God Iverson

THE FIRST LESSON Galatians 3:23-29 Daisy Ottmann

THE ANTHEM There Is A Balm in Gilead arr. William Dawson
There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole. There is a balm in Gilead, to heal the
sin-sick soul. Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain, but then the Holy Spirit revives
my soul again. If you cannot sing like angels, if you cannot preach like Paul, you can tell the love
of Jesus, and say “He died for all.”

THE SECOND LESSON Luke 8:26-39 (page 63 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONA Few Thoughts on Exorcism” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 380 O Christ, the Healer

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.THE OFFERTORY Chorale-Prelude in G Major Dietrich Buxtehude

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 374 Lord, Make Us Servants of Your Peace (verses 1 through 5)

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Prayer of St. Francis (excerpt) René Clausen
For it is in giving that we receive, and in pardoning that we are pardoned, for in dying we are born
to eternal life. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Amen.
