WORSHIP JUNE 30, 2013
13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; I will remember your wonders of old.
People: I will meditate on all your work, and muse on your mighty deeds.
Leader: Your way, O God, is holy. What god is so great as our God?
People: You are the God who works wonders; you have displayed your might
among the peoples.
Leader: Let us worship the Lord our God, who creates, redeems and sustains us.
- Psalm 77:11-14

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 482 Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of holiness, our sin is before us. In our baptism, you declare that we are
free of sin and created for new life. And yet, we know that we have not lived up
to our baptism. We have not forsaken the ways of sin. We have lingered in
doubt and fear and allowed them to shape who we are rather than taking our
identity from your eternal grace. Forgive our willingness to take on once more
the bonds from which you have freed us. Forgive us, we pray, and remake and
renew us, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound?
People: By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it?
Leader: Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death?
People: Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that,
just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father, so we
too might walk in newness of life. Believe the promise of the gospel:
Leader: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Romans 6:1-4

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 210)
Before the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame, from everlasting Thou art
God, to endless years the same.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Threes, fours & fives
are in Room 011; K-2nd grade in Room 003; 3rd-5th grade are in Room 005.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON
Galatians 5:1; 13-25 (page 179 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM Be Thou My Vision Irish melody, arr. Alice Parker
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; nought be all else to me, save that Thou art; Thou my best
thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou
my true word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I thy true son; Thou in
me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise, Thou mine inheritance,
now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.
High King of heaven, my victory won, may I reach heaven’s joy, O bright heaven’s sun! Heart of my
own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
THE SECOND LESSON
Luke 9:51-62 (page 66 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONFor Freedom” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 366 Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY
Partita on “O Gott, du frommer Gott” J.S. Bach

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 376 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (verses 1, 2 and 4)
