THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God, we are unworthy to come into your presence because of our
many sins. We do not deserve any grace or mercy from you. We have sinned
against you, and we have offended you. And yet, O Lord, as we acknowledge our
sins and offenses, so also do we acknowledge you to be a merciful God, a loving
and favorable parent, to all who turn to you. And so we humbly ask you, for the
sake of Christ your son, to show mercy to us, and forgive us all our offenses. By
your Spirit, O God, take possession of our hearts, so that, not only the actions of
our life, but also the words of our mouths, and the smallest thoughts of our
minds, may be guided and governed by you. Amen.
- from The Reformed Liturgy of John Knox 1560

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through
the blood of Christ.” So believe the good news of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
-Ephesians 2: 13

THE FIRST LESSON Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14 (page 580 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal arr. Alice Parker
Hark, I hear the harps eternal ringing on the farther shore, as I near those swollen waters,
with their deep and solemn roar. Hallelujah, praise the Lamb! Glory to the great I Am! And
my soul though stained with sorrow, fading as the light of day, passes swiftly over those waters
to the city far away. Souls have crossed before me, saintly, to that land of perfect rest, and I
hear them singing faintly in the mansions of the blest.
THE SECOND LESSON
Luke 12:13-21 (page 70 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONGrace: That’s It” Drew Stockstill

See, now he sleepth beneath a juniper tree in the wilderness, and there the angels of the Lord encamp

cometh help. Thy help cometh from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He hath said, thy foot
shall not be moved. Thy keeper will never slumber.
