Texts: Isaiah 1:1, 10-20; Luke 12:32-40

SANCTUARY FLOWERS
The flowers in the sanctuary this morning are given to the glory of God and dedicated with love and gratitude to those who care for our children in the nurseries and our children's worship leaders here at MPC each Sunday. Deepest appreciation from the Children's Ministry Team and the whole congregation, as we kick off the new school year!

SUNDAY SCHOOL KICKOFF
Following the kickoff this morning, we begin our school year classes with kids "moving up" to their new grade during children's worship: three and four year olds in Room 011 with Kyra Hall; Kindergarten-1st graders in Room 003 with Debbi Loomis; 2nd-3rd graders in Room 001 with Jessica Coons; 4th-5th graders in Room 005 with Sally Horne.

THORNWELL OFFERING
During worship this morning, we will collect the annual offering for Thornwell Home for Children. This Presbyterian outreach in Clinton, SC, serves at least 100 children each year - from toddlers to teens. Some stay for only a few months, others grow up at Thornwell. The envelopes in your worship bulletins were once again made by the Mission Camp attendees. Please join us in supporting the children at Thornwell.

COUPLES GROUP
Morningside couples are invited for a fun social evening at the home of Peter and Sarah Mercer Chatel, at 7 p.m. Friday, August 16 (4588 Pine St., Smyrna). All duos are welcome! To learn more and RSVP, be in touch with Kathy and Alan Bremer kdbremer@bellsouth.net.

FAREWELL WALTER HUFF-AUGUST 18
Morningside will honor our dear friend, Walter Huff, with a reception after church on Sunday, August 18. If you would like to contribute
something to the gala occasion, please contact Susan Oder at susanoder@gmail.com or 404.308.6337. We look forward to letting him know how much we appreciate his many years of love and service to us.

Seating will be at a premium that day, so please be advised that while we will make every effort to place as many chairs in the sanctuary as the fire code will allow, there is a limit to what our sanctuary can safely hold. Please plan adequate time for parking.

25 YEARS OF SERVICE OFFERING
Walter Huff's impact on the life of our congregation is immeasurable. In order to share our love for Walter on his final Sunday, August 18, members who wish to contribute financially to a "love gift" for Walter are invited to do so through the church. Make your check to MPC and write "love offering" on the memo line.

THIS I BELIEVE-AUGUST 25
Included in our worship service August 25 will be our now-traditional “This I Believe” Sunday featuring Morningside members speaking from their hearts.  This year we’ll hear from Joseph Green, Kim Perez, and David Wingert.  Afterwards, we’ll say goodbye to summer on a high note at our next Congregational Lunch.  Please fill out the enclosed insert to RSVP to the church office (RSVPs should be received no later than Monday, August 19). MPC Youth will assist in serving the lunch as a thank-you for your support of their programs and also will share about their summer trips.

INTOWN COLLABORATIVE MINISTRIES
ICM provides a range of comprehensive services to our neighbors, including a food pantry (located at Druid Hills Methodist) which operates to provide the basic necessities of food to our homeless neighbors. ICM’s Pantry is supported by MPC and other congregations, individuals, businesses, and organizations in zip codes 30306/30307. Through August 25, MPC will collect the following foods for the pantry: canned and boxed meals (stew, noodle bowls, chili, etc.); crackers; and sugar packets. Please bring your donated items to Welcome Center to help your neighbors in need.  Contact Nancy Collins ncollins0209 @gmail.com, 404.804.5191 with questions.

KIDS NEED NEW ‘THREADS’ FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL
Starting school at the end of summer usually means a shopping trip for new clothes. You can help kids who haven’t the means to otherwise ‘buy’ fall outfits by donating gently used school and casual clothes to our Threads closet, located in the elevator hallway next to Fellowship Hall. They’ll go to the shop managed by All Saints Episcopal where kids and their families get vouchers to select their own favorite styles and colors. Clean out your child’s closet--pass along the good stuff!

HANDBELL CHOIR
Our Handbell Choir will begin a new season on Thursday, September 5 with rehearsals each Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m., and you are invited to ring with the choir!  If you are interested or for more information contact Jeff Peters at 404.731.9291, jeffcpeters @gmail.com.

SAVE THE DATE!
It’s not too soon to mark off October 25-27 on your calendar and plan to get away to cool and lovely Montreat, NC, for our fifth annual all-church retreat featuring speaker Tom Long!  The topic is "Reading Other People's Mail: Fresh Insights from the Letters of the New Testament." Each year, it’s been an event to remember for the whole family.  Contact Mary Chapman with any questions chapman.maryv@gmail.com.

MPP
Morningside Presbyterian Preschool still has openings for toddlers and Pre-K students for this fall. Toddlers must be 15 months old by September 1 and Pre-K children must be 4. Contact Sarah Tomaka, Preschool Director, for more information: mpp @morningsidepc.org.
