WORSHIP AUGUST 18, 2013
20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill

THE PRELUDE Praeludium in E Major Vincent Lübeck
Sarah Martin, guest organist (1654-1740)

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
People: Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
Leader: Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.
People: For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered
above all Gods. For all the gods of the people are idols, but the Lord
made the heavens.
Leader: Let us worship God, who creates, redeems and sustains us. Amen. - Psalm 96:1-5

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN The Old Hundredth Hymn Tune arr. R. Vaughan Williams
All: All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful
voice; Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell, come ye before
Him and rejoice. Know that the Lord is God indeed; without our aid
He did us make; we are His folk, He doth us feed, and for His sheep
He doth us take.
Choir only: O enter then His gates with praise, approach with joy His courts unto; praise,
laud, and bless His name always, for it is seemly so to do. For why? The Lord our
God is good, His mercy is forever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, and shall
from age to age endure.
All: To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom heav’n and earth adore,
from men and from the angel host, be praise and glory evermore. Amen.

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women to live and die in faith.
We confess that we are indifferent to your will. You call us to proclaim your name, but
we are silent. You call us to do what is just, but we remain idle. You call us to live
faithfully, but we are afraid. In your mercy, forgive us. Give us the courage to follow in
your way, that joined with those from ages past, who have served you with faith, hope
and love, we may inherit the kingdom you promised in Jesus Christ. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing: it is the
gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one might boast.
People: For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works,
which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Ephesians 2:8-10

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 210)
Before the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame, from everlasting Thou art
God, to endless years the same.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Ephesians 2:8-10 (page 181 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM The Old Church (from Prairie Songs) Stephen Paulus
(b. 1949)
The old church leans nearby a well-worn road upon a hill that has no grass or tree, the winds from
off the prairie now unload the dust they bring around it fitfully. The path that leads up to the open
door is worn and grayed by many toiling feet of us who listen to the Bible lore, and once again the
old-time hymns repeat. And every Sabbath morning we are still, returning to the altar waiting there.
A hush, a prayer, a pause, and voices fill the Master's House with a triumphant air. The old church
leans awry and looks quite odd, but it is beautiful to us, and God. - text by Della B.Vik

THE SECOND LESSON Luke 13:18-19 (page 71 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONThe Mustard Seed” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 171 The King of Love My Shepherd Is (verses 1 through 6)

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (A Brief Statement of Faith—Presbyterian Church USA)
In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God,
the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. In a broken and fearful world
the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to
Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices
of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. The
same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ
through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, and calls women and men
to all ministries of the church. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that
nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
