SANCTUARY FLOWERS
The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and thanksgiving for the ministry of Walter Huff by the congregation of Morningside Presbyterian Church.

A NOTE FROM WALTER HUFF
I want to express my gratitude to you - Morningside members, choir, staff, and Atlanta friends - for your support and presence today, and for the actions and words that you have displayed to me these (almost) 25 years. As I thank you, so does my family - my mother Jane, my brother Peter, and in spirit, my father Walter. This church has blessed them, in the special hours that they have shared with  you through the years, experiencing with joy the words and music of the faith.

Today's musical offerings are examples of great works for the church, exhibiting the splendor and intimacy of God among us. The opening "Old Hundredth" tune is brought forth in a stirring arrangement by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Stephen Paulus, a noted American composer, gives us a beautiful sound setting of Della Vik's nostalgic poem "The Old Church." The two organ works that we will hear today (composers Lübeck and Dupré) display the colors and grandeur of our renovated Wicks-Coulter organ - made possible by many of your faithful contributions.

The final choral response today is the "Dona Nobis Pacem" from Bach's "Mass in B Minor." This movement ends Bach's inspirational Mass, seen by many as one of the towering achievements in the history of art.

Much can be said of the influence of Sarah and Gene Martin on my musical education (Sarah as my only piano teacher from age 8 to 18, and Gene - my church choir director in those same years.) Always active in the Atlanta musical scene, they taught me not only the ideas and techniques of music, but also how to musically serve a church, with quality and focus. Thank you, Sarah, for your Prelude today.

Thanks also to Mason Copeland, a 3rd-year double major (organ and choral conducting) at Indiana University. Mason graciously accepted my invitation to play the Offertory today. As you shall hear, Mason is a fine representative of the Jacobs School of Music, and I have enjoyed this past year, being his professor there. I am also grateful that instrumentalists and Morningside friends Yvonne Toll, Greg Holland, and Mark Mashburn are able to join me today.

How can I fully thank the Morningside Chancel Choir - with hundreds of members singing in this chancel, from 25 years ago to the present? You have been the true messengers, having made thousands and thousands of pages of music come alive in this building. You are a huge part of my life.

Today, let us all let "music" speak for itself. It teaches us more than we will ever fully understand.

Walter

25 YEARS OF SERVICE OFFERING
Walter Huff's impact on the life of our congregation is immeasurable. In order to share our love for Walter today, members who wish to contribute financially to a "love gift" for Walter are invited to do so through the church. Make your check to MPC and write "love offering" on the memo line.

WALTER HUFF RECEPTION
Morningside will honor our dear friend, Walter Huff, with a reception after worship today. We look forward to letting him know how much we appreciate his many years of love and service to us.

THIS I BELIEVE-AUGUST 25
Included in our worship service August 25 will be our now-traditional “This I Believe” Sunday, featuring Morningside members speaking from their hearts.  This year we’ll hear from Joseph Green, Kim Perez, and David Wingert.  Afterwards, we’ll say goodbye to summer on a high note at our next Congregational Lunch. Please fill out the enclosed insert to RSVP to the church office (RSVPs should be received no later than this Monday, August 19). MPC Youth will assist in serving the lunch as a thank-you for your support of their programs, and also will share about their summer trips.

INTOWN COLLABORATIVE MINISTRIES
Through next Sunday, August 25, MPC will collect canned/boxed meals (stew, noodle bowls, chili, etc); crackers; and sugar packets for ICM's food pantry. They provide a range of comprehensive services to our neighbors in need for the 30306/30307 zip codes. Please bring your donated items to the Welcome Center baskets.

KIDS NEED NEW ‘THREADS’ FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL
Starting school at the end of summer usually means a shopping trip for new clothes. You can help kids who haven’t the means to otherwise ‘buy’ fall outfits by donating gently used school and casual clothes to our Threads closet, located in the elevator hallway next to Fellowship Hall. They’ll go to the shop managed by All Saints Episcopal where kids and their families get vouchers to select their own favorite styles and colors. Clean out your child’s closet--pass along the good stuff!

RETREAT NEWS!
If you plan to attend this year's retreat in North Carolina, the registration form and fee is due right away ($30 for individuals, $60 for couples, $75 for families of 3 or more)!  Rooms are filling up fast, and the only way to reserve one is to get your form and check into the church office. The balance of fees will be due by September 22. A meeting of the retreat committee will be held in the Session Room Thursday, August 22 at 7 p.m.  Anyone interested in helping is welcome to come. Tom Long is this year’s featured speaker, and his topic is "Reading Other People's Mail: Fresh Insights from the Letters of the New Testament." Contact Mary Chapman with questions chapman.maryv@gmail.com.

MPP
Morningside Presbyterian Preschool still has openings for toddlers and Pre-K students for this fall. Toddlers must be 15 months old by September 1 and Pre-K children must be 4. Contact Sarah Tomaka, Preschool Director, for more information: mpp@morningsidepc.org.

CHILDREN’S CLASSES
Today, preschool children will hear A Wonderful Sight, a story about Jesus and a blind man.
