"This I Believe..."
Homilies delivered by Joseph Green, David Wingert
Texts: Psalm 133; Hebrews 13:20-21

SANCTUARY FLOWERS
The flowers in the sanctuary are given by Rhonda and Robert McIntosh to the glory of God and in honor of Cameron McIntosh, Eagle Scout, with deep appreciation to those who guided Cameron along the way.
LAY READER
In keeping with the Presbyterian tenet of the priesthood of all believers, Morningside members participate regularly in worship leadership.  Today's lay reader is Sarah Mercer Chatel.
“THIS I BELIEVE…”
These words prompt various responses from all of us. Some think of Starbucks cups, others of Edward R. Murrow, and many of us remember these services at MPC where our fellow congregants told us what they held as core values. During worship this morning we will repeat “This I Believe”.  This year’s homilies will be delivered by Joseph Green, Leslie Prince, and David Wingert.
CONGREGATIONAL LUNCH
Following worship today we'll say goodbye to summer on a high note at our Congregational Lunch. We always plan for guests, so don't hesitate to join us in Fellowship Hall to enjoy a burger bar from Yeah! Burger and frozen yogurt from Yogli Mogli. MPC Youth will assist in serving the lunch as a thank-you for your support, and they will share about their summer trips.
EAGLE SCOUT COURT OF HONOR
Rhonda and Robert McIntosh, with Boy Scout Troop 455, proudly invite you to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Cameron Lewis McIntosh tonight, August 25, at 7 p.m. at Morningside Presbyterian Church. A reception and site dedication will follow. RSVP to Rhonda 404.876.2302, rimcin@bellsouth.net.
INTOWN COLLABORATIVE MINISTRIES
Through the close of today, August 25, MPC will collect canned/boxed meals (stew, noodle bowls, chili, etc); crackers; and sugar packets for ICM's food pantry. They provide a range of comprehensive services to our neighbors in need for the 30306/30307 zip codes. Please bring your donated items to the Welcome Center baskets.
Dine-out for ICM this Monday, August 26, at Yeah! Burger in Virginia-Highland. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of all proceeds to ICM. Please join us from 6 to 10 p.m. to support ICM’s work to serve our homeless neighbors.
CHILDREN AND YOUTH CHOIRS
Children's Cherub Choir (Kindergarten through 3rd graders) will have a parent meeting and first practice this Wednesday, August 28 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Regular 6 p.m. weekly half-hour practices will begin Wednesday, September 11. Contact Children's Choir Director Rebecca Shipley rebeccashipley@mindspring.com to confirm participation in Cherub Choir. The Youth Ensemble (4th graders and up) will begin a six-week segment on Wednesday, September 18, from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Contact Rebecca Shipley for more information about practice schedule (9/18 to 11/3), singing dates and to confirm participation in the Youth Ensemble.
THINKING ABOUT JOINING MORNINGSIDE
Morningside will offer visitors the following opportunities to learn more about our church. On Sunday, September 8, we will hold an Inquirers Class followed by a New Members Class on Sunday, September 15. Both will be held in the Session Room at 9:45 a.m. For more information or to register, please contact Baron Mullis 404.876.7396, ext. 11; baron.mullis @morningsidepc.org.
LGBT & FRIENDS
LGBT & Friends will kick-off its 2013-2014 season at the home of Jeff Peters and Michael Siedschlag (1812 Meadowdale Ave. NE) on Tuesday, September 17 at 7 p.m. This month's meeting will include discussion and preparation of Morningside's involvement in Atlanta's Pride events in October. RSVP to
Michael Siedschlag mwsiedschlag@gmail.com.
KIDS NEED NEW ‘THREADS’ FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL
You can help kids who haven’t the means to otherwise “buy” fall outfits by donating gently used school and casual clothes to our Threads closet, located in the elevator hallway next to Fellowship Hall. They’ll go to the shop managed by All Saints Episcopal where kids and their families get vouchers to select their own favorite styles and colors.
CHURCH RETREAT - OCTOBER 25-27
Rooms are filling up fast! If you plan to attend this year's retreat in North Carolina, the registration form and fee is due right away ($30 for individuals, $60 for couples, $75 for families of 3 or more)!  Forms are available in the Welcome Center and Narthex. The balance of fees will be due by September 22. Tom Long is this year’s featured speaker, and his topic is "Reading Other People's Mail: Fresh Insights from the Letters of the New Testament". Contact Mary Chapman with questions chapman.maryv@gmail.com.
NEW “OUR DAILY BREAD” AVAILABLE
Copies of the devotional booklet, Our Daily Bread, (September through November) are available in the Narthex and Welcome Center. Pick one up as you leave the sanctuary this morning.
KIDS PARTICIPATE IN WORSHIP
If your 3rd-5th grader would like to carry communion elements into worship this school year, let Melinda Sandkam know that you will be joining us for a brief training session in the sanctuary at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, September 8. This is a great way for older elementary children to connect with worship as leaders. Baron Mullis will talk to kids about the meaning of communion and worship leadership.
THEOLOGY ON TAP
After breaking for the summer, Theology on Tap resumes Tuesday, September 10 at 7 p.m. Ken Sharpe will host (1700 Timberland Road, Atlanta, 30345). Due to the Labor Day holiday we will meet on the second Tuesday. RSVP to the church office office@morningsidepc.org.
MORNINGSIDE MINGLE
Resolve to Mingle in September! Please join fellow Morningside members and guests for an adults-only evening of socializing Sunday, September 22, 6 to 9 p.m. Our third Morningside Mingle will be hosted by Tara and Randy Parrish and Hillery and John McNeill, at the Parrish’s home (1206 Cumberland Rd. NE, 30306). Heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be provided. RSVP to the church office @morningsidepc.org by Monday, Sept. 16.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS—9:45 A.M. IN ROOM 201 LED BY DREW STOCKSTILL
Does the Bible seem too hard to understand? Do you feel like you're missing something about these ancient texts? Ever wonder how to talk about scripture in a world that seems to be so divided by "what the Bible says?” Everyone is invited to the adult Sunday school class as we begin a new six-week series on "Reading the Bible for Understanding." We will explore the different types of literature in the Bible and some tools for interpreting scripture. Bring your questions, bring your thoughts, bring your brain, and bring your heart. All are welcome!
CHILDREN’S CLASSES
This Sunday, the preschool class will learn about a man who was thankful that Jesus healed him in the story Thank You Jesus! The second through fifth grade classes will hear the story of Jesus' resurrection appearance to Thomas and explore what it means to have faith - to believe without seeing.
