23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
9:30 a.m. Coffee and Conversation
9:45 a.m. Sunday School Kickoff
Adults: We continue our series on "Reading the Bible for Understanding." Does the Bible seem too hard to understand? Do you feel like you're missing something about these ancient texts? Ever wonder how to talk about scripture in a world that seems to be so divided by "what the Bible says?" Everyone is invited to the adult Sunday school class to explore the different types of literature in the Bible and some tools for interpreting scripture. Bring your questions, bring your thoughts, bring your brain, and bring your heart. All are welcome! We meet in
Room 201.
Children: The Preschool Class will respond to the story It's a Noisy Place! with animal activities. K-1, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th classes will consider Paul's message from Colossians that Christians are called to live a life of love, with age appropriate activities for each class.
11:00 a.m. Worship with Communion
Preaching: Rev. Dr. Baron Mullis
Liturgist: Rev. Drew Stockstill
Sermon: "When It All Changes"
Text: Philemon 1:1-21; Psalm 1
12:00 p.m. Fellowship
12:15 p.m. Deacons
5:00 p.m. Youth Kickoff
6:00 p.m. Journey
7:30 p.m. Meditation Group
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
The modern period adds social ethics to religion's agenda, for we now realize that social structures are not like laws of nature. They are human creations, so we are responsible for them. - Huston Smith
WELCOME CHOIRMASTER
We welcome Robert Bolyard, Interim Choirmaster, to Morningside. With a Master's degree in Choral Conducting from Yale, Robert brings a wealth of experience and knowledge. Some highlights: conducting the Yale Chamber Singers and Yale Repertory Chorus and Orchestra, and working as chorus-master for several opera productions. He has served churches in Atlanta and California. Coming to us from Epiphany Lutheran Church in Conyers, Robert sings with Coro Vocati, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus, and plays the viola da gamba. He has served as guest clinician in area middle and high school choruses. In its fourth season, Robert directs Uncommon Practice, a collective of early and contemporary music vocalists. As a bonus, he improvises music for live comedy every weekend. Sarah Martin will serve as organist in the near term.
THINKING ABOUT JOINING MORNINGSIDE
Morningside will offer visitors the following opportunities to learn more about our church. This Sunday, September 8, we will hold an Inquirers Class followed by a New Members Class on Sunday, September 15. Both will be held in the Session Room at 9:45 a.m. For more information or to register, please contact Baron Mullis (404.876.7396, ext. 11; baron.mullis@morningsidepc.org).
KIDS PARTICIPATE IN WORSHIP
If your 3rd-5th grader would like to carry communion elements into worship this school year, let Melinda Sandkam know that you will be joining us for a brief training session in the sanctuary at 12:15 p.m. this Sunday, September 8. This is a great way for older elementary children to connect with worship as leaders. Baron Mullis will talk to kids about the meaning of communion and worship leadership.
