WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 8, 2013
23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE
Psalm Prelude: Psalm 37:11 Herbert Howells Sarah Martin, organist But the meek shall inherit the land, and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to your name, O most high! People: To declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night. Leader: To the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. People: For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. Leader: Let us worship God, who creates, redeems and sustains us, Amen.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 476 O Worship the King, All Glorious Above! (verses 1 through 5)

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, we confess there are times when faith is not easy. There are times when the claim of the Gospel upon our lives is costly. There are times when we would turn aside onto an easier path rather than face what your promises would elicit from us. There are times when we believe we have done right only to find that everything has changed. Forgive us when we fail to do and be what you have called for from us. Forgive us when we cannot remember that it is you who have carried us through the years. And in forgiving us, give us encouragement that we may be strengthened in our faith and calling. We pray all these things in Jesus’ name and for his sake. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel: People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 210) Before the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame, from everlasting Thou art God, to endless years the same.
