LIFE@MORNINGSIDE

Joanna Adams preaching, "Long Distance Love"

Text: 2 Timothy 1:1-14

PREACHING THIS SUNDAY
We welcome our pastor emerita, Joanna Adams, back to Morningside's pulpit this morning. We are excited to welcome back both Joanna and Al!
TODAY’S SERVICE MUSIC
In observance of World Communion Sunday we have music from all across the globe! The prelude is a setting of a Puerto Rican Carol, "See the Eastern Star" (#64 in our hymnal) - the rhythmic figurations and harmonic language depict the joy and anticipation of the Kings as they follow the light of God. The offertory is a setting of the Korean hymn melody, "Bai," (#373 in our hymnal) framed by the Korean folk melody, "Arirang." The anthem is from the Soweto area of Johannesburg and is in the language of Xhosa; it speaks of trusting God even while in great hardship. The response is a short prayer for peace by Korean composer Geonyong Lee.
PEACEMAKING OFFERING
Be sure to read the insert regarding the good work done with the money raised from the Peacemaking Offering received today and prayerfully consider what to give to this Presbyterian-wide collection. Please use the enclosed envelope.
RHO READERS BOOK SALE
The RHO Readers will have a book sale during today’s fellowship.  The books, donated by the group and MPC members, are priced to sell. All proceeds will go to charity.
NEW SMALL GROUP FORMING
Have you aged out of Young Adults but not ready to admit you have One Gray Hair?  Join us today, at 6 p.m. at the home of Leslie and Lloyd Prince. Come for fun and to share your ideas and hopes. Contact Brad Odom jbradleyodom@gmail.com to RSVP.
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING - OCTOBER 20
The Officer Nominating Committee will announce the final slate of church leaders for the next term—Elders for the Session, and Deacons for the Board of Deacons, each to serve for three years.  We will also vote on new members for next year’s Officer Nominating Committee. The meeting takes place immediately after the worship service, so plan to remain in your seat and exercise your membership right to select your church’s leadership. Child care will continue.
RETREAT SIGNUPS
A record number of Morningside members will enjoy a relaxing weekend October 25-27 in the Blue Ridge Mountains at the All Church Retreat. If you would like to be part of the group, there is one room left.  Contact Mary Chapman to signup chapman.maryv@gmail.com.
LYDIA CIRCLE

October 15. For more information, contact Tony Fishpaw tonyfishpaw@me.com.
JUNGLE JAM
MPC will be a “zoo” on Saturday, October 19, as the annual Jungle Jam all-family event takes over our grounds from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. with rides, games, and food. Jungle Jam is Morningside Presbyterian Preschool’s fall fundraiser to which neighbors, friends, church families and preschool families are all invited to join the fun and get acquainted. Volunteer shifts are available to set up, clean up or be part of the fun for first or second shift during the event. To take part, contact Mary Hardy Holaway maryhardyh@gmail.com.
SUPPORT OUTREACH EVENTS
There are two October opportunities to learn more about outreaches that MPC partners with while enjoying a meal. The Clifton Sanctuary Ministries annual graduation dinner will be Sunday, October 13 at North Avenue Presbyterian Church. Contact David Johnston dmjohnst@gmail.com today to join the MPC table. On Wednesday, October 23, the Interfaith Children's Movement welcomes supporters to its annual breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at The Temple. This year's guest speaker is Joanna Adams. Contact the church office to join the table.
OUR HOUSE
We are collecting mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, jackets, sweaters and Halloween costumes for children (infant-5 years) who attend the Our House preschool for kids facing homelessness.  Please bring your new/gently-used donations to the Preschool or Welcome Center by October 25.  For more information, please see the Preschool bulletin board or contact Shepherd Becky Schreiber becky.schreiber@gmail.com.
TAI CHI CLASS FORMING
A Fall Tai Chi class began last Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in Morningside's Fellowship Hall.  If interested in improving flexibility and balance, contact Bob Wells at wellscom@comcast.net to sign up.
SIGN UP TO BE IN PAGEANT
The sign up form to participate in the Christmas Pageant (December 15, 5 p.m.) is available on our website and at church. Be sure to fill it out and return to church by November 3. See the form for details regarding ages and practices. Sewing volunteers are needed for some repairs and a few new costumes.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE
Next Sunday, October 13 we continue a 10-week class using the History Channel mini-series The Bible at 9:15 a.m. in Room 107. We watch one episode together and then at 10 a.m. we have a guided discussion on the episode, what the Bible says, and what God might be saying to us today. This is a very approachable class and a great way to engage the Bible story anew or for the very first time. All are welcome.

Next Sunday, the class in Room 201 will continue their series on Reading the Bible for Understanding at 9:45 a.m. where we learn new tools for reading and understanding Scripture. Everyone is invited to the adult Sunday school class. Bring your questions, bring your thoughts, bring your brain, and bring your heart. All are welcome!

CHILDREN’S CLASSES
Today, Pre-K class will hear A Girl Named Rebekah to learn how Abraham chose a wife for his son. Early elementary classes will consider an Old Testament messenger, Elijah, as he designs a contest to prove that God is real. 4th and 5th graders will be in worship.
