WORSHIP NOVEMBER 24, 2013
CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY

THE GATHERING Chris Peters
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE We Gather Together arr. Edward Kerr Rachel Ficklin, guest organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for God has looked favorably on God’s people and redeemed them. People: God has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of David. Leader: And you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. People: By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Leader: Let us worship the Lord! - Luke 1: 68-79

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 371 Lift High the Cross

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Great God, you are creator and ruler of all. You spoke creation into being; you formed us from the dust and breathed life into us. You became one of us through Jesus and showed us how to be your beloved community. Yet, we confess that we have not honored the reign of Christ and have bowed to other idols: greed, power, and ease. We have ignored your calls to show mercy and serve those in need. We have stood by and watched as injustice and violence prevail. God, for- give us, for we do not know what we are doing. Help us to follow you, and re- member us as you come into your kingdom. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader:  For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone    who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. People:  Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world,    but in order that the world might be saved through him. Leader:  So believe the good news of the Gospel: People:  In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!   - John 3: 16-17

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 139) To Thee, great One in Three, the highest praises be, hence evermore! Thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore.

* THE HYMN 306 Fairest Lord Jesus

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH From The Theological Declaration of Barmen (1933) As Jesus Christ is God’s assurance of the forgiveness of all our sins, so, in the same way, and with the same seriousness, he is also God’s mighty claim upon our whole life. Through him befalls us a joyful deliverance from the godless fetters of this world for a free, grateful service to his creatures. We reject the false doctrine, as though there were areas of our life in which we would not belong to Jesus Christ, but to other lords. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and for- give us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for- ever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Andante con moto Felix Mendelssohn
