Baron Mullis preaching, "A New Zoo"

Texts: Romans 15:4-13; Isaiah 11:1-10

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY
Welcome to worship at Morningside Presbyterian Church. Please complete the information in the Friendship Pad at the end of the pews and pass the pads down and back again during the Concerns portion of worship. Worship notebooks and books for children are located in the library. Nursery for infants and toddlers is in Room 105; 2 year olds are in Room 012. Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Passing of the Peace for special classes: Threes and fours - Room 011; K-1st grade - Room 003; 2nd-3rd grade - Room 001; 4th-5th grade - are in Room 005.
SERVICE MUSIC
The Prelude and Postlude are innovative settings of very familiar Advent carols by Michael Burkhardt. Dr. Burkhardt is currently Director of Worship and the Arts at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Lavonia, MI. He is in frequent demand as a choral clinician, organ recitalist, and hymn festival leader. The organ offertory is probably one of J. S. Bach's most familiar works. "Wachet auf," one of the six Schübler Chorales, is a literal reduction in score by Bach himself of the tenor aria from his cantata of that same name. This work is a trio, with the chorale melody in the middle voice, representative of Jesus as Mediator. One writer has commented that "the achieving of a melody independent of the chorale is spectacular." The Schübler Chorales were written in 1748.
TALK BACK TO THE PREACHER
If you've ever wanted to ask Baron more about something he's preached, or to hear what scripture teaches about something, you are invited to come to Room 201 at 12:30 p.m. this Sunday, December 8. We will talk about whatever you want - the sermon, the way we plan worship, what's going on in the Presbytery, or whatever!
YOUTH GROUP
The Youth Group Christmas party is tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. The youth and their advisors are encouraged to bring a wrapped gift ($10) for a “white elephant” exchange. RSVP to Chris Peters chrispeters@morningsidepc.org for the party. We are grateful to have 11 youth assisting as stage crew for the December 15 pageant. The stage crew only practice is 3:45 to 5 p.m. today in Fellowship Hall. If you can help (as this month's service event) with the chili and soup dinner following the pageant contact Chris.
SHARE YOUR FAVORITE RECIPE
Soup and/or chili needed for December 15 following the pageant. Sign up on the bulletin board next to the church office or contact Mary Chapman today chapman.maryv@gmail.com if you can provide a pot filled with something delicious.
FAMILY CHRISTMAS TREE
We will have a large, live tree in Fellowship Hall to hold your special ornaments. We're inviting members of our community to contribute one, non-breakable ornament to decorate the tree. Place your ornament in collection baskets around church through December 15.
SPECIAL MUSIC SUNDAY-DECEMBER 15
As the season of Advent dawns, and decorations go up in houses, businesses, and here at Morningside, the Chancel Choir is preparing a special program of music for next Sunday - rather than the hanging of the greens, we will present The Singing of the Greens, a selection of Advent and Christmas carols that draw on images from the natural world. Spanning music from the 14th through 20th centuries, and featuring our quartet of soloists, the Morningside Handbell Ensemble, and the incomparable Sarah Martin on the organ, we hope this bouquet of musical treats will fill you with the wonder and joy of Advent.

DINE OUT TO BENEFIT ICM
If you eat dinner at Manuel's Tavern this Tuesday, December 10, from 5 to 10 p.m., they will donate a percentage of the evening's profits to Intown Collaborative Ministries that supports those in need in our neighborhood.
ANNUAL CANNED FOOD COLLECTION
Our annual collection of non-perishable items for the Atlanta Community Food Bank wraps up next Sunday, December 15. Mac 'n cheese, peanut butter, canned veggies, meats, fruits and low sugar whole grain cereals are welcome in order to fill up our five canisters.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS EVE AT 4 P.M.
Any 2nd-5th grader who would like to participate in the 4 p.m. Family Christmas Eve Service should contact Program Director Melinda Sandkam by this Wednesday, December 11. You must be able to attend a 3 to 5 p.m. practice on Monday, December 23 and arrive at 2:45 p.m. on December 24. There are roles in the tableau to join "Mary and baby Jesus" and opportunities to read liturgy.

VOLUNTEER AND DONATION OPPORTUNITIES AT WOMEN'S SHELTER
Morningside will provide volunteers at Shearith Israel's Women's Shelter again this year as part of our mission outreach program. Volunteers serve from 6 to 8 p.m. warming up the dinner meal (provided by others) and serving as the women arrive from their daily work or job searches.  Kitchen cleanup follows. Volunteer dates are: January 8-12 and February 5-9 (men are welcome). If you can help, contact Phyllis Grimes at grimes2230@bellsouth.net. The shelter could greatly use this winter donations of mittens, gloves, and hats. Please place your donations in the Welcome Center baskets by December 15.
