THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 49 Once in Royal David’s City

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God, it is so easy to confuse our understanding of morality with true
righteousness. Where you have called us to greater good than merely adhering
to social convention, we have sometimes settled for the easy way. But we know
that you demand of us a thinking, living faith. We know that you sent not an
idol for us, but a Savior. We know that he gave not rules, but a challenge to follow
him. Still, it is sometimes easier to make rules into idols. So forgive us we
pray, and lead us in right paths for his name’s sake, for it is in the strong and
merciful name of Jesus that we pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord;
People: “I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,”
Leader: He also adds,
People: “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
Leader: Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
People: Our sins are forgiven. All thanks be to God. - Hebrews 10:16-18

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 9)

*THE HYMN 36 In the Bleak Midwinter

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
