1ST SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS

THE GATHERING Caroline Parrish
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE In the Bleak Midwinter Allen Orton Gibbs

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise God in the heights!
People: Young men and women alike, old and young together!
Leader: Let them praise the name of the Lord because only God’s name is high over all.
Only God’s Majesty is over earth and heaven.
People: God has raised the strength of God’s people, the praise of all God’s
faithful, the people of Israel who are close to God.
Leader: Let us worship the Lord! - Psalm 148: 1, 12-14

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 40 Joy to the World

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Loving God, this is the season we joyfully sing of your birth and we declare
the earth has received her king. But we confess that even as we repeat the
sounding joy, we do not always live as if the wonders of your love have been
made real in our lives and in our church. We are often blind to your beauty,
doubtful of your presence and skeptical of your redeeming grace. At times, in
our ignorance, we are like the innkeeper, with no room for you in our lives.
Forgive us, we pray, and help us to truly live into the reality that your presence
among us has saved us and carries us through our lives together. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Friends, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God—in this all humanity is
the same.
People: But all are treated as righteous freely by God’s grace through the
redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel!
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Hallelujah! Amen! -Romans 3: 22b-24

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 23)
Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains, and the mountains
in reply echoing their joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo; Gloria in excelsis
Deo.

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
