SERVICE MUSIC
Maurice Duruflé, 1912-1986, was one of France's leading composers of the 20th century. His main compositions were organ and choral works; he is probably best known today for his "Requiem." The prelude this morning was written in 1961, one of only a handful of organ works. Wilbur Held, b. 1914, and Wayne Wold, b. 1954, are both American composers and professors. Wold is a professor at Hood College in Frederick, MD and Director of Music Ministries at First Lutheran Church in Ellicott City, MD. The Christmas Oratorio is a grand cantata cycle which Bach begins and ends with settings of the Passion Chorale - “O Sacred Head Now Wounded" - thus liturgically and musically connecting the birth of Christ with his death and resurrection; the anthem is the final, triumphant movement.
CHRISTMAS DAY-EPIPHANY BANNERS
The Christmas Day-Epiphany banners are titled Can You See the Christ? and The Glory of the Lord Came, Christ Jesus. They represent the love, hope, joy and strength of God bringing forth Christ incarnate to the world. The purple shades moving into the vibrant batiks show the arms and heart of God giving the person of Christ to our lives. You can see the powerful love and hope of Jesus in the golds, oranges and intense blues as they rise up from the purples spreading into the world. The gift of Christ given to us on Christmas Day and the recognition of Christ as the Son of God by the Magi with their gifts on Epiphany are represented in both banners.
YOUTH GROUP
Registration for two out-of-town 2014 Youth Summer Trips are due today, January 5 for the Montreat High School Conference (June 1-7) and "Rising 8th and Up" Mission Trip to Government Street Presbyterian, Mobile, AL (July 13-18). There will be a new Youth Track Mission Camp (completed 6th-12th grade) July 21-25, for which registrations are due February 2. (Mission Camp registration forms for completed 2nd-5th graders will be available February 1 with a later due date.)
YOGA RESUMES
Pam Sharpe, veteran trainer and yoga teacher, invites you to join her yoga class on Tuesday mornings 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Classes begin this week, January 7 and will include poses that will help students strengthen, lengthen and relax. Contact Pam for more information yogapam@bellsouth.net.
THEOLOGY ON TAP

ONE GRAY HAIR
One Gray Hair will meet at noon this Wednesday, January 8 for lunch and a program in Fellowship Hall. Our speaker is Officer Reddick, an Atlanta police officer and member of the Morningside/Lenox Park Security Patrol. He will talk with us about crime prevention and ways to keep safe. SEASON OF SERVICE
- Next month Morningside is having its first Season of Service, a month of challenging you and your friends to participate in the wide variety of mission work MPC is involved with. Find time to check out a new outreach or bring an old friend or new member with you as you help out your regular one - meet the Plus 1 challenge! MPC hopes you will get connected while helping those in need. Stay tuned for details of our February event. We will kick off the event on Sunday, February 2 with the youth collecting the annual Souper Bowl offering and continue throughout the month to highlight outreaches and provide opportunities to volunteer. See below for two great opportunities already available in January. A Season of Service can’t be squeezed into only one month!

Join us for the annual MLK Work Day on Saturday, January 18 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. doing light repair and yard work to help seniors stay in their homes in the city of Decatur. - VOLUNTEER AT WOMEN'S SHELTER
Morningside is providing volunteers at Shearith Israel's Women's Shelter again this year as part of our mission outreach program. Volunteers serve from 6 to 8 p.m. warming up the dinner meal (provided by others) and serving as the women arrive from their daily work or job searches. Kitchen cleanup follows. Volunteer dates are: January 8-12 (only 1 opening on Sunday, January 12) and February 5-9 (men are welcome). 2014-2015 SCHOOL REGISTRATION
Early registration for currently enrolled families and MPC members begins Tuesday, January 21. You can now download the necessary forms at http://www.morningsidepc.org/preschool/registration_procedure.html. Please submit your application no later than February 2 as open registration will begin on Monday, February 3. Applications should be completed and returned to Sarah Tomaka, Preschool Director.
MPP FUN-RAISER
Hold your calendars (and get ready to open your hearts and wallet) for the 2014 MPP FUN-Raiser to be held 7 p.m. Saturday, February 1 at Le Maison Rouge (the events room at Paris on Ponce). The event promises to be a fun evening of celebrating our preschool and mingling with our extended MPP family. Much like years past, the centerpiece of our event is a Live and Silent Auction featuring donated items from neighborhood merchants, MPP families, teachers and of course the art projects from each class! Tickets on sale now; contact mpp@morningsidepc.org.
YOUTH ENSEMBLE
The winter session for the MPC Youth Ensemble begins January 22 with Wednesday practices for 6 weeks through Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. and singing in worship on March 2. SUNDAY MORNING CLASSES
Our two adult classes restart in January. The group meeting in Room 107 at 9:15 a.m. has been working their way through the Bible using the History Channel’s series “The Bible” as a guide, while enjoying breakfast and coffee (January 12, 19, 26). The class in Room 201 meets at 9:45 a.m. Child care is available during both these sessions.
CHILDREN’S CLASSES
In the story Who is This Child, the Preschool Class will learn about twelve-year-old Jesus’ visit to the temple. K-1st graders and 2nd-3rd graders will read Luke 2:41-52 and learn how twelve-year-old Jesus worshiped God and proclaimed his faith in the temple. 4th and 5th graders will join the congregation in worship.

LENTEN MISSION TRIP TO NEW ORLEANS
Our continued relationship with RHINO (Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans), a strong outreach founded after Hurricane Katrina by St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian, reflects MPC's desire to support recovery work that takes years. The cost is $225 for lodging at the Brent House Hotel, most lunches and some dinners. Make checks out to MPC and give them directly to trip leader Roland Behm by February 2 in order to join us March 12-16. Contact Roland with questions
