WORSHIP JANUARY 5, 2014
2ND SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS

THE GATHERING Chris Peters
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Prélude sur l’Introït de l’Épiphanie Maurice Duruflé

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness,
come into his presence with singing.
People: Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his,
we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
Leader: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to
him, bless his name.
People: For the Lord is good, his steadfast love endures forever, and his
faithfulness to all generations.
Leader: Let us worship God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. - Psalm 100

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 68 What Star Is This, with Beams So Bright

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, you are from everlasting to everlasting. You, the creator of
heaven and earth extend from the furthest reaches of the universe to the depths
of Sheol. Yet in our finitude, we forget from whom our blessings flow. We blur
the lines between creator and creation and think that we are the authors of our
own blessings. But you alone are eternal, you alone are the source of all life and
all good. We are chastened and we ask forgiveness. Return us to your marvelous
image, remind us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and call forth
from us the commitment you would have us bring, through Jesus the Christ we
pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman,
born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we
might receive adoption as children.
People: And because you are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son
unto our hearts, crying. “Abba, Father!”
Leader: So you are no longer a slave, but a child, and if a child, then also an heir,
through God. Believe the Promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Galatians 4:4-7

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 466)
