WORSHIP JANUARY 12, 2014
BAPTISM OF THE LORD

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE When Jesus Went to Jordan’s Stream Dieterich Buxtehude
Sarah Martin, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it;
for he has founded it on the seas and established it on the rivers.
People: Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord and who shall stand in his
holy place?
Leader: Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls
to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.
People: They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the
God of their salvation.
Leader: Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of
Jacob. Let us worship God, who creates, redeems and sustains us.
- Psalm 24:1-6

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 455 All Creatures of Our God and King

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, we confess there are times when faith is not easy. There are
times when the claim of the Gospel upon our lives is costly. There are times
when we would turn aside onto an easier path rather than face what your promises
would elicit from us. Forgive us when in our living we fail to do and be
what you have called for from us. Forgive us when we cannot remember that it
is you who carried us through the years. And in forgiving us, give us encouragement
that we may be strengthened in our faith and live out the calling you have
given us. We pray all these things in Jesus’ name and for his sake. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: I appeal to you, therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God to present your
bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual
worship.
People: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing
of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God – what
is good and acceptable and perfect.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Romans: 12:1-2

He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
